Re: Abscesses - how many is normal?

Just a bump for a question - how long after antibiotics have finished would you wait to see if more abscesses appear? Would a 2 week standard quarantine be long enough, or do I need to wait longer before declaring them safe?

Re: Abscesses - how many is normal?

Yep - got ABs now for them, so a good course, and will wait until a while after to see if more come up too.

Fingers crossed the ABs will take care of it. If worst case comes to worst I guess I'll have to have a closed group! But fingers crossed it won't come to that :)

Re: Abscesses - how many is normal?

I thought it was - I've been through probably 2-3 bales of bedding in that time from different batches so doubt it's that, but I need to change anyway.

So I know - is it spread via contact only?

Abscesses - how many is normal?

I'm probably worrying over nothing, but I wouldn't mind a 2nd opinion! Back in april one of my male rats got an abscess - this boy is old, tilty and people to mites and such, so not such a surprise, but in april and may this boy got 3 abscesses (1 facial), another older boy got 1 (he did pass under ...

Re: Some advice about 'getting rats' please!! :)

The fact you're researching is fantastic to begin with! Lots of us here aren't much older than you - I'm 19 and got my 1st rat at 14. And yes, I got a single one too! Got my first rescues at 16 :) Generally most places if you're under 16 will want parental permission, a lot under 18, which yo...

Re: Rat castration?

I pay around 40, 45 each for castration (and last was in aug/sept so probs a bit more now) so I'd say that price is good - do check what it included though, ie is that for any meds during/after, checkups etc - some quote a price for the op and all the anesthetic, meds etc are on top! Assuming that i...

Re: An overview of the new forum

Just a thought, i know im a pain! but might it be a good idea to have an 'emergency' section where non members can post? just incase there is an emergency and nobody about to approve their account? The section could have a few admin aides who could quickly delete any spam perhaps, or a mod could so...

Re: Bitten Off More Than I Can Chew!?

Well knowing from Jan about what some of her rats are like, handling a few nervous boys would be childsplay for her

Lovely that you've met someone local! 10 doors away is nearer than local

Re: Rats gender

My vets you're looking at around £40-45 per rat for a neuter - some vets are a bit more or less, so it's not a cheap option. Age depends - I've read about people doing them as young as 10 weeks, my vets will at that age but prefer 12-14 weeks, it's easier when the males testicles are full sized whic...

Re: Questions about neutering

Mine have all cost between about £40-45. Mine have always healed quickly - I had 3 boys done at I think about 13/14 weeks, 2 boys done at 16 months and 2 boys done at unknown ages, one assumed to be 12 months or so, the other 18ish. All have been fully or almost fully healed within 10 days. Some con...

Re: Does your vet charge per rat?

Hmmm thinking again and reading the above, I'd definitely phone, don't want you expecting £15 or £30 plus meds and ending up with £60 + meds!

Re: Does your vet charge per rat?

My vets seem to charge per group - I normally take in 2 rats anyway for company, I've only ever taken in 1 extra but never been charged for that. And my extra ratty always gets a cuddle - sometimes I've booked in 2 and again only been charged 1 consult too. If taking in 4 I'd mention it though just ...
