Re: found a baby rat!!

I don't know a lot but I think keeping him warm is quite important - do u have a hot water bottle? When my boys have been ill I've filled a hot water bottle with slightly warmer than body temp water & left them on top of it. I know cows milk isn't appropriate but if I were u I'd try putting some wat...

Re: Recipe for Rosemary and Banana biscuits :)

gets a bit slimey... Just talking about banana was enough to turn my stomach but now I can almost feel the mushy consistency! :sickrat: :sickrat: :sickrat: Might try just mixing water with flour & maybe add some cinnamon or ginger for flavouring! Or maybe I could use an egg for some moisture... any...

Re: ikea tubs for explorer?

I believe people use these - the 100x58cm dimensions. There is a thread with pictures here. :)

Re: Whole corn-on-the-cob

My rats occasionally get the cob when we've had corn... I used to think that I did a pretty good job of stripping the cob till I saw the finger sized piece left after the little darlings have finished with it!! I've also given them the frozen mini-cobs once or twice in the hot weather - I'd recommen...

Re: Sudden Porphyrin Discharge - Do we need to worry?!

Thanks! I just needed someone to reassure me!! I think his bladder may be causing him problems cause the porphyrin seems to appear when he starts fidgeting before he does a wee! Something's blatently bothering him so we'll get him to the vet soonish & get him back on metacam which seemed to clea...

Sudden Porphyrin Discharge - Do we need to worry?!

Nutty's got HLD & potentially kidney/bladder stones - the vet couldn't figure out what the issue is! Despite that he's seemed generally alright in himself until this morning when we discovered a red discharge from one of his eyes... I've never seen this amount but I'm assuming it's porphyrin. He...

Re: wet food ideas for picky old man

We're having the same problem with Nutty... what we've been doing so far is simply crushing his normal dry food in a pestle & mortar, sieving it & blitzing the rest with the food processor & then sieving that, mixing in some lactol & vitamins (which we previously powdered) & then...

Re: Licking.... and..... nibbling??

Not so much nibbiling-related but I had to tell u all about the cutest thing Bella did this morning! She poked her head out of the circus while I was trying to coax my old man with HLD out to give him some extra wet food & then she grabbed hold of my hand & tried to pull it inside the circus...

Re: Advice needed urgently choking badly

Lol!!! There's nothing quite like a trip to the vets to scare an animal into a miraculous recovery!! He was probably just after some special attention!  Glad he's better now! :)

Re: Licking.... and..... nibbling??

Lizzie's our dominant one & she likes to nibble me while grooming... she also gets a little carried away both with us & the other rats... she likes to barber her sister & regularly tries to eat my cheek/nose! bless...!

Barbering - can anything be done?

Lizzie's been barbering both herself & her sister, at least I'm pretty sure it's Lizzie that's been doing the barbering since none of my boys have ever had any unexplained bald patches & Lizzie has bald arms & Bella's got patches by both ears that she blatently couldn't have done herself...

HLD - Advice needed

The vet confirmed that Nutty has HLD tonight.... does anyone have any general advice? We've not had a rat with HLD before so any advice would be v much appreciated! At the moment he's still getting around ok but he's dragging his tail & tends to not seem to notice if his back feet end up in slig...

Re: Sniffing underneath neutered boy .. why?

Rambo does this to all male rats, neutered or not, which has got him told off a few times! He does it every time we reintroduce him to another rat that we've had to keep separated from him but did it most when my brother's gf had a lone boy that we thought would benefit from some free-ranging time w...

Re: Rambo's hurt his leg

Thanks, we checked him again today (which involved pulling apart the house he was hiding in, much to his annoyance!) & his foot is definitely swollen today but he still doesn't seem to mind me poking at it! I think we'll take him to the vets tomorrow evening... swelling suggests (to me!) that th...

Rambo's hurt his leg

I feel dreadful! Rambo's not using his back left leg & it's only just occurred to me that he hasn't come out for a few days! We usually open their door let them run over the sofa while we're watching tv & Rambo's never exactly been the friendliest rat so it didn't occur to me to think there ...
