Re: Vets bill

I think vet costs depends also on whether it's a private practise or funded in some way by charity or whatever. E.g animed here is £7 per consult (don't trust the vets there though), and mine which is a private vets is £22 per consult. Mine are reasonable for "standard" operations such as a neuter £...

Re: Upper resiratory

Likewise- mine have only started looking ill with either a very vicious quick onset virus, or after months and months of progressive and slow deterioration with myco which eventually leads to pneumonia which is when they get really ill.

Re: How to convince a vet to try Draxxin... - please help!

I'm afriad i can't help with the draxxin issue, but if drugs in that family have been effective you could ask for erythromycin which the vet may be more willing to prescribe. I have found that very effective in combo with baytril for myco based ear infections that were really stubborn. Sorry i can't...

Re: Baytril and...? for respiratory problems.

Thanks for replying to all my questions and sorry it's taken a while to get back in here are you typd all that. Agree with Neotoma. If he hasn't already been treated to death with Baytril then my choices would be Baytril and Ronoxan to hit it hard. I'd suggest a long course too (4 weeks) to e...

Re: Upper resiratory

good luck with the septrin- keep an eye for progress. If the septrin helps her then you know it's not a maycoplasma infection but something else. if you see no imporvement within a few days then i would suggest askign to add another antibiotic which does cover mysoplasma to further the coverage. sin...

Re: Combo to kill resp problems

Have you tried him with the baytril again rather than just assuming resistance? The reason i ask is that if it's a mycoplasma infection baytril is one of the best anitbiotics for it, as it kills a wide range of mycoplasma organisms which most other types of antibiotics do not. I would suggest baytri...

Re: Baytril and...? for respiratory problems.

A few questions if you don't mind? * Is his infection acute (came on rapidly but quickly) or chronic (Longstanding infection that has got progressively worse) * how is his health apart from the infection? * Could you go into more detail about his symptoms: * Is his breathing laboured? * Are his lung...

Re: Immune System Boosting?

Echinacia for one- the rat warehouse do phytopet immune booster drops which I've bought. can't say i've had much occasion to use them on the rats at the moment but i did get so desperate with a cold that i ended up taking them for about 3 days and defintiely felt noticably better and quicker to reco...

Re: Respiratory infection-youngster not responding to treatment

I don't think so- Xray shows objects and spaces by density so it'll show you that something is in there and where it is (as far as I know, iand how thick/dense whatever it is but as far as i can think the onyl way to find out what organisms are causing infection is to do a swab and cuture. So it wou...

Re: Abdomonal mass :0(

The only mass i have ever had in an abdomen turned out to be a very nasty internal abscess that had grown around a boys bowell after a neuter. i don't know for sure whether the two were related but i suspect they may have been. In all honesty in that situation if the rat was healthy enugh fr surgery...

Re: Respiratory infection-youngster not responding to treatment

^^ she talks a lot of sense. Steroids do depress the immune system so in a youngster i would switch to metacam which is an anti inflammatory like ibuprofen. it can help to reduce inflammation without effecting the body's ability to fight. the other thing is that mysoplasma is a chronic disease- in v...

Re: Upper resiratory

^^^ agreed- how old is the rat? it may not be mycoplasma in which case there are better options to treat a wider range of organisms. defintiely agree that if your going to treat with AB's its better to do too much than too little becaus eof the likelihood of resistance
