Re: I can't believe some people!

I am pretty sure I will. At the moment I only have Ben as Ted passed away in the early hours of this morning.

Can't wait to meet the new little ones, I think the neighbour is bringing them over on Thursday.

Re: I can't believe some people!

I don't understand it either, after he talked her out of releasing them she then suggested pts. Poor little things. There are plenty of rescues in the local area who would be willing to rehome them so her two suggestions were unjustified. I can't wait to meet the ratties though. I am one who believe...

I can't believe some people!

So I got a knock on the door today and it was one of my neighbours. He asked if I wanted some rats (knowing that I own rats already). The story is that his sister bought a pair of rats for her son who hasn't looked at them since they arrived, and she was planning on releasing them out at the local g...

Re: Poorly rat , any ideas

I don't think a splint would last more than a few seconds on a rat before they or their cagemate pull it off!

Fortunately rats heal very quick so fingers crossed he will be back to full strength soon. :)

My poor Xander

Tonight he will be making his final trip to the vet, the PT has defeated him and he looks miserable. Two night ago I thought he was on his way out but he came back fighting. But having just seen him have a fit I can't let him fight this battle anymore. :( He is now sitting in the corner of his cage ...

Re: Back legs

As the others have said, it's probably HLD, there's some more information here . Hind leg weakness can also be associated with kidney failure and heart failure , so I'd have a look through those links and see if any of the symptoms fit. That sounds about right actually, when Silent Bob went through...

Re: Why does one of my rat's jolt?

Jolting... Am I right in thinking that it's actually known as 'popcorning'? I saw it a lot when my boys were younger, although my Ben is over 2yrs old and still does it! He still looks and acts like a youngster.

Re: neck tumour

Echoing what longlegs said about Baytril in water, it is a no no. Good things to mix it in would be Ribena, malt ferret vitamin paste or even chocolate spread. For my past underweight rats I mixed it in a spoonful of baby food. If the girl is really stubborn then syringing is the only option. I usua...

Re: Lump on face - what could this be?

Thanks guys. I went to the vets today and it was drained - the vet said a whole load of puss came out :sickrat: so I am hoping it is just an abscess and will heal properly. What should I look for if there is a chance it's a gland tumour? And any advice for keeping the abscess clean? I have been tol...

Re: Help with Meloxicam dosage please x

My new vet didn't know the correct doseage either. But I use Meloxidyl for Ted and it has always been one drop once a day. It seems to be sufficient enough to do the intended job. He will eat it so I just use the syringe to drop one drop into his normal food (he lives on his own). I don't know how m...

Re: Euthanasia methods?

I would be the first to say that I think there are other equally valid methods of pts, and that peritoneal injection by an unskilled practitioner could be awful (ie if done badly), but it would be wrong to suggest that gas is necessarily less distressing for a rat, particularly one with breathing p...

Re: Lumpy Rats and Exspensive Vets

I think it depends on the individual rat and there genetics/breeding. Xander is just turning two and starting to develop HLD. Ben is 27 months old and is just like a young rat! Few of my rats have made it to 2yrs old, mostly due to tumours. The majority of mine all originated from pet shops though, ...

Re: Lump on face - what could this be?

This looks a bit like what Ash had. Although it was more on the base of his ear. Sadly the abcess drained into his ear and he lost all his balance. My vet told me it was a Zymbal's Gland abcess and tumour. She also said if I wanted to I could blast the ear infection with antibiotics but it wouldn't ...
