Re: less sisters= more attractive male rattie

yeah i'm not sure how much you can generalise to hoomans - as I think men who have sisters are generally much nicer towards women - but s'pose that does not necessarily make them more attractive to everyone... My main observation of the article was that they called the babies 'pups' - whereas i thou...

Re: Ferplast Furet XL/Tower

This is my ferplast tower - but I've amended it so the two parts sit side by side. They have holes and tunnels connecting the 2 sections - currently got 4 boys in there but going up to 6 soon! http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l540/Kiri_Owen/P1040422-1.jpg http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l540/...

A lot of squeaking

My boys have always been squeakers but recently they've got a lot more boisterous with other and I think one of them is establishing himself as alpha at last. Somethimes it gets a bit nasty - but so far its been manageable - they are about 10 months old now - is that when the hormones kick in But my...

Re: Why do they bully?

Think its like the playground - or survival of the fittest! Maybe you could seperate the sisters for a few days - let the others have some peace and establish their own heirachy - but probably someone else would start being the bully then or there'd be an even bigger fight when they went back. Maybe...

Re: Been bitten quite badly!

Maybe make a bit more noise before you put your hand in the cage next time - by speaking to them they get a warning, and encouraging them to come forward, so they know its you. I think girls can be a bit territorial and jumpy. Stay confident, keep handling them loads, and make sure you don't have an...

Re: Bite

Oh its really shocking when you get bitten like that, but try not to let it ruin your confidence with them. Who knows, maybe he smelt something or got confused or was in pain..? but I do think, and this is just my personal style so maybe others will disagree, that it is a good idea for the rats to k...

Re: Are branches safe???

Great thanks for those bits of advice. I've dried a few branches out, and given them a clean, and the boys are enjoying running over them and having a good nibble! :) Great to find a CHEAP cage accessory!

Are branches safe???

Can anyone help me please? I've recently upgraded to a much bigger cage and thought I'd like to put some wooden branches in there for the boys to climb over. The local pet shop has this kind of thing for sale but they are about £25 per branch, and as they wee on everything (the rats not the pet shop...

Re: Cage upgrade = more rats= help!

I had my 4 boys in a Jenny and they were quite happy with it - though I did add extra shelving for them. I would say the access is not great - I think only suitable for rats that want to come out easily. I have since bough the ferplast furet tower - which I initially found impractical to be honest -...

Re: Blue spot on Julian's eye

Thanks - I've just come home from the vets and yes its a catarac. I think if I'd read your post first I may have saved myself £25 as really she just confirmed my suggestion - but yeah better to be safe than sorry. Now I feel sorry for Julian when I look at him, but other than the catarac he seems ju...

Re: Blue spot on Julian's eye

Well its really weird because this morning I thought 'oh its gone' but then noticed there was still a spot, just much smaller. It seems to be inside the eye rather than on the surface and is the same colour as the blue menbrame at the corner of the eye. I'm still not really sure what it is, but it l...

Blue spot on Julian's eye

Can anyone help me with this? I'm really worried cos I just noticed Julian's got a pale blue spot a few mm across on his eye. I'm sure it wasn't there yesterday - yet it looks like part of the eyeball. I'm now worrying its cancer or something - but he's only about 10 months old tho. :sadrat: I'm goi...

Re: Wild Pet rats

Did Alistair ever get back to anyone? I was looking forward to hearing about his wild ones - though I can't think how one would end up raising entirely wild rats? :???:

Re: Wild Pet rats

Yes I can't wait either - lets hear more. BTW my ex had a half wild litter. For some reason he left his two girls outside in their cage one afternoon and one of them escaped. However, she came back the next night, but yeah you guessed it, she was pregnant. She gave birth to 17 brown rats (she had be...

Re: My rat seems to have OCD....

Welcome to the forum! Your girls sound like fun. One of my boys does something a bit similar; when he's out of the cage if he finds anything tasty but too big or too many to eat at once, he'll move it all to various secret stores around my room. I then come across them when I'm cleaning - but someti...
