Re: Adopted two new rats... I just have a few q's...

Did they tell you how many times the boy has bitten and what circumstances?

If he's likely to be cage terrirorial then you might consider wearing some thick gloves the first time you get him out just in case.

Well done on giving them a new home :D

Re: Ratty Estate development xD

You can't be finished yet - there's still floor space available!

I'm sure you could squeeze a shoebox (or 10) in there!

I bet they have a great time playing with all the stuff :D

Re: Worst vet experience ever

You're not complaining about the practice itself or any of the other employees. You are complaining about a trained vet who should damn well know better than to treat any animal in such a way. As he is retiring I very much doubt much can be done about it however you need to make your voice heard. I'...

Re: Baytril+Ronaxan not working-what next for resp infection?

Septrin worked wonders on my two respy girls after Baytril combinations stopped being effective. Having said that, I saw an improvement within 4 or 5 days but your girls may be slower to respond as they have been on constant ABs for a few months. It's an absolute devil to get into them though (even ...

Re: Swollen Eye - Infection? Tooth Abcess or Tumour?

I rehomed my lone rat AJ after her cagemates died. She is just over 2 years old now and she settled into her new home with her new companions as if she'd always known them!

Generally, a well-handled rehoming isn't hard on the rat, it's hard on the human though :-?

Re: Wooo.....New ratties being introduced to Spot...!!

Oh my what a sweet little trio

Sounds like the intros are going well (hope that's not tempting fate!) they look pretty relaxed together.

Definitely keep handling Spot and getting her out for cuddles. How are the little ones like at being handled?

Re: Poor Tempest :o( - fat toe may need amputating

Hi Nicky - sorry to hear about Tempest's poorly toe :( fingers crossed the meds work and he doesn't have to have it amputated. re Calpol dose, it's the same per 100g as a Baytril dose http://www.itwor.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=1962&start=0 (it's probably on here too somewhere but that link wa...

Re: Cats as company for rats

Yay! Ratty friends for Spot

Hope all goes well :luck:

(as she's a rescue/rehome she might be a bit waryof you due to her past circumstances rather than the fact she is a lone rat)

Fifi - I think entropian is the name of the condition rather than the cream from the vets

ETA comment to self: "Try reading the post properly next time you blind old bag"

Re: How long?

I think Flagyl works better/more aggressively in combination with another anti-b such as Baytril or Doxy so if your rats aren't showing any improvement you could ask your vet if they will prescribe another AB to take with it.

Edited to amend that pesky typo

Re: First intro just done, had a bit of a fight...

Sounds as if the majority of the time they spent together was fine with just the usual pinning etc. Personally I'd keep doing exactly what you're doing now - supervised free range together armed with a spray bottle in case of extra aggro. Hopefully a couple of days of this will be enough to socialis...

Re: Cats as company for rats

Grrrr! I meant to add this but posted too soon: Cats as they get older can suffer from dementia, the same as humans. From experience I know that a person with dementia can be abusive and/or physically aggressive towards people they know and love. The same could happen with one of your cats and if th...

Re: Cats as company for rats

Hi M355Y Sorry this thead is upsetting you however many people on here are making extremely valid points re: nature vs nuture. My old neighbour bought a puppy and a baby rabbit at the same time for her children. The animals grew up together, would fall asleep together in the garden etc - never once ...

Some info here I found a while ago when looking into thi, don't know if it's of any use: http://www.ratbehavior.org/SpayTumorIncidencePetRat.html Age at spay surgery and post-spay tumors The rats that were spayed at younger ages tended to be less likely to develop tumors later in life than those spa...

Re: lonely rat, companion??

I think babies are generally easier to introduce but when Alijane rehomed AJ (aged 2) for me she settled in straight away with the Parky Babies. She loves her babies  Then Marnie (approx 18 months) was intro'd to the group and I think that went 100% okay too.
