Re: What percentage of bucks need castrating?

3/7

One was roughly 6 months,
The other 2 were rescued at about 1year old, and I had them 2-3 months before they visited the nad fairy as they proved impossible to introduce to my previous lot!

Re: Free range question

I think it depends on the rats :) I had two groups who could spend hours together no problems, but you could guarantee that if left with each other for 24 hours, someone would end up with a deep gash and blood everywhere!

Re: I Think I Might've Found The Ultimate Intro Method.....

I have to say, I was re-introing mine for the FOURTH time today (first attempt resulted in Jeremy being neutered, 2nd resulted in bear being neutered, got them together and Bear, the alpha, died and Willy went off his rocker and had to be neutered...) and I decided to bathe them all (something I nor...

Re: Reversing the effects of rat poison.

Yes, Warfarin is very old fashioned now, plus the rat population goes through cycles of not being resistant to it and being resistant to it. I think Brodifacoum is the main poison used at the moment (an anticoagulant AND a vitamin K antagonist). I wish people would just not be dirty mingers and put ...

Re: Collecting urine samples

I'd put them into a carrier for 10 mins or so and use a syringe to suck up the wee that they'll undoubtedly leave!

Re: facial swelling

Poor bean, maybe an abscess?

Bear had one on his face. The vet didn't want to lance it so gave me some Abs (maybe Septrin?!) and it went down within a week :)

Re: Benefits of spaying "later" in life??

I'd be scared to spay routinely, its a very invasive operation!

Likewise I only get my boys neutered when they're being too aggressive, even though it is believed that it would increase their life span.

Re: Cleaning water bottles.

I got the idea off here to use dried rice! Add it to the bottle, add some hot (not boiling) water and shake it like a crazy thing! Works wonders but you might need a sieve when getting it out again :) x

Re: One eye larger than other

feel terrible for saying but 2 of my rats developed an enlarged eye when they had PTs :( but the vet did think it could be glycoma to begin with in one of them. I guess it could also be an infection or an access or just that shes poked it badly? what ever it is i hope it ifts better! x
