Re: GMR.... What about GMC??

I know exactly what you mean, my rats are perfectly happy in their Luna 400 (7 rats max) but I do occasionally peek for any cheap cages going on preloved. I think I saw an Explorer going for £100 recently and was a bit miffed because a) I didn't have the money and b) I was pining for an Explorer bef...

Re: Ear and cheek pulling?

I have generally seen this when a rat wants badly to be dominant but doesn't have the physical ability or confidence to do it. I have found that it generally stops when the rat being hounded looses there temper and puts the offender in there place, or the offender becomes alpha, or I have them neut...

Re: Ear and cheek pulling?

Hi, I only know what this might be from the research I've done for my own problem. It's called 'Barbering' when they rip off the fur; it's like excessive grooming. Often to do with dominance or anxiety. I think so long as it doesn't cause any cuts/scabs it's ok. Unfortunately one of my ratties is a...

Re: First time rat owner seeking help

I wouldn't feel comfortable freeranging my rats in my room even if i had it rat proofed. I can just imagine them legging it under my bed and deciding to freak out on me. I have a playpen made of correx plastic fixed together with parceltape. I use bulldog clips to hold it shut, but lately i've had t...

Re: Ideas for treats

Have you tried egg yet? Mine love a nice boiled egg, it's hilarious watching them crack the egg open and fight over who gets the yolk! Also sweetcorn is another favourite of my rats, I have a sweetcorn skewer i bought from a petshop, can leave it hanging in the cage and they just rip the corn off. S...

Re: FLIES!!

You can buy stickers in the shape of sunflower seeds, they attract the flies and kill them without any pesticides.

I often use one of those thick plastic-y tablecloths too - works quite well and wipes clean!
Thats a really good idea, i'll keep an eye out!

Ear and cheek pulling?

I'm freeranging my rats as we speak, and I just noticed Tas doing something I hadn't noticed before. She keeps going up to Possum and pulling her ears, and sometimes grabbing lumps of fur from her cheek. There's no squeaking from either end, but Tas seems to be doing this quite excessively. I had no...

Seem to be getting on okay still. Given them a little food, no fighhts, though monk's not eating much at the minute anyway. Guess just wait and see.
Sounds like you're doing alright, as long as their not fighting just leave them be, and good luck. ^^

Re: Introductions

Ah right... this is why I got a few different sizes of carriers, my favourite is the cabrio cat carrier, you can comfortably keep 2-4 rats in there for up to a week as long as they get daily attention. Makes a great hospital cage too. When you tried the bath did you put any blanket or towel down fir...

Re: Introductions

I'd advise putting them in a carrier together at this stage. This will force them to interact rather than avoiding each other. I usually give this stage 24-48 hours, depending how long it takes for them to all pile up together. Only intervene if a fight breaks out that draws blood.

Best of luck :)

Re: Urgently need advice - agressive rat

BTW, sometimes when Kamina is acting all off, i'll make clicking and clacking noises to him to mimic bruxing, this usually settles him down. I'll make this noise before approaching him in the cage and make sure he see's my hand coming towards him. Dunno if that'll help at all, he might be too wound ...

Re: help! bad first introductions!

Did you introduce them on neutral territory? Smelling where a strange rat has been (urine or scent marking trails) can cause the rat to feel tense and threatened. Rats heal very quickly and hopefully the little guy (presume they're all boys) will heal up fine. When i'm doing introductions I take 3 b...

Re: Urgently need advice - agressive rat

Fingers crossed for you both. I'm sorry that he seems to be misbehaving so much. He's only bitten me once, though he has foofed at me occasionally but if i approached him slowly he would then switch to grooming my hand. I think all the big change for him has probably been too much, and his hormones ...
