Re: breeding cuts down life?

When I first bred rats in the early 80s it was considered a normal thing for lifespan to be shorter in rats that had had litters- each litter took a few months off the rat's life. Not sure why but by the mid-late 90s this was no longer the case. Possibly just due to better nutrition and housing avai...

Re: What might daddy be? (pic heavy)

I'll say: The light babies are siamese Mum berkie with the roan, I've found hoodie/roan tends to give striped roans Dad berkie or hooded, if they were both hooded based the whole litter would have more white Dad- any agouti based colour that the mum doesn't carry, he could have been anything, topaz,...

Re: Breeding for Dalmatians

He looks a lot like the blazed/vari mismarks I have bred but suspect he might be a dominant blazed where the blazed varis and capped in the UK are recessive.

Re: Pearl Merle - is it 'really' a variety?

Did someone call? :D You can get merle in English or mock mink pearls and mock mink non pearls and colours based on mock mink like platinum. It generally shows more in babies than adults. Proper merle is spots of mink on the pearl background. I will have to trawl through photobucket to find some pic...

Re: Russian Burmese or Russian Cream

Any Russian based colour will be paler than a black based one, so Russian cream would be paler than standard cream. I think you will have to wait until a babies are quite a few weeks older before you can be sure of the colour.

Re: Are agoutis healthier?

The best stats are ones from related rats in the same line but of different colours, then you can be fairly sure if there is a difference in longevity between colours it is the colour not some other factor, there would be no point comparing a long lived PEW line and short lived agouti line.

Re: Are agoutis healthier?

I think in the big picture they do live slightly longer, obviously individual cases will vary. It has nothing to do with inbreeding but often mutated coat colour is connected with physiological changes as well.

Re: Black or ruby eyes?

It isn't simply lightened eyes from the gene, the eyes are different, its only the pupil that is ruby not the iris. The ones I had had bluish sclera/eye whites too.

Re: Black or ruby eyes?

Its a roan thing, it gives them a flash of ruby in their pupil.
