Re: Vets bill

I've spent thousands this year alone on my many rats. My mother, despite claiming to be an animal lover and has her own dog which is all wrong muscularly so always at the vet, complains all the time at me for spending "so much" on the rats. She says it means I can't spend the money on "doing nice th...

Re: Joining explorers together - Single level!

I don't see why one of the sections can't just a panel of plastic or wood on the bottom, or even a tarpaulin. Presumably both sections will be on the floor so what's the problem? The trays will stop substrate and rats getting to the floor underneath.

Re: Chemical castration

I think one of my boys who is v stressed and stroppy at the mo could be a candidate for this. I'm not happy to put him under for the op. How much have people paid for it? Did I read somewhere there was an increased risk of tumours or something with prolonged use? Or have made that up? (sorry to hija...

Re: My new baby rat got out of cage and.....

Aw how lovely :)

I think the cutest thing any of my rats have done was when my darling Lump (RIP) snuggled under the duvet next to me, head on the pillow, like he thought he was people

Re: First time rat owner seeking help

Don't panic! This is quite normal for girly rats - they like to run around, explore, have ratty business to attend to :) To be honest, a lot of my boys are like that too. Sometimes as they get older and squishier, they'll be happy to come and sit with you but often they seem to think they have more ...

Re: embarking on first intro.... HELLLP!!

My experience of intros is with boys but I gather that girls are much easier to intro to. It's important to remain calm and relaxed about the intro yourself I think so you don't convey any anxious feelings to the ratties. If you search on here for "carrier method" there's loads of helpful hints and ...

Re: FLIES!!

So glad someone has posted about this. My rat room is my lounge and horrid little flying beasties are always hanging around. A friend nearby has the same problem with her bedroom which is where her ferret lives. I do like the sound of the velcro fly screens, I was hoping for something preventative r...

Re: new owner , one rat really friendly, other a bit less so

Sounds quite normal to me :) don't worry about it, just give them time, be patient and calm. When you feel more confident you could try carrying the wary rat around in your hoody or jumper so he learns you are a nice safe place and gets used to you. Plenty of gentle handling and positive reinforceme...

Re: Rat Pneumonia?

Pneumonia is usually cause for concern in rats so best identified and treated early. It sounds like your vet is quite on the ball. If your rat is sedentary due to the illness, you must make sure you turn her frequently to avoid fluid building up in the lungs. Hydration is very important too. I somet...

Re: open cyst (unpleasant description)

That sounds like an abscess has burst, which is good as now it will drain all the yucky pus out. Unusual though that it has taken such a long time to pop. Your ratty might appreciate a bit of pain relief.

Anti-biotics can hinder abscesses from coming to a head and bursting, could this be the case?

Re: Opinions wanted please...

Aw :) I think you've worded that really well, there's surely no way any FR member would judge you badly as your prime concern is clearly the welfare and happiness of your ratties. I bet a fair few of us know how you feel and the dilemma you're talking about. I do muse over whether I will give up kee...

Yes :) I have a lot of roans and "roaned out" boys - when they have turned competely white. Gorgeous aren't they?

They lose their colour at different rates, from rat to rat. That's all i know!
