Re: Q about Myco

If it is myco then I wouldn't worry. Most pet rats (if not all all of them) carry it as it was shown to be passed on from the mother at birth. The infections to be wary of are SDAv and Sendai which are more virulent. If you are concerned, just take a shower and put on clean clothes that your rats ha...

Re: Supplements

You can also add echinacea or phytopet immune drops in their water in stressful times to help support the immune system.

Re: Albus gasping for breath :(

I would not put anything eucalyptus/menthol, homemade or not near the cage, it is too strong for their little nose and lungs and can irritate.

Glad to hear he is feeling a bit better today tho :)

Re: Albus gasping for breath :(

Echinacea should be given orally rather than rubbed on the cage? What form of it do you have? I would go back to the vets and see if they can give him a steroid shot :luck: They probably wouldn't want to do that directly after metacam though as the two combined increase the risk of gastrointestinal ...

Re: Dribbling form mouth, and jerky head movements

18 months sounds a reasonable age to start senior aid. How much ipakitine do you give?

The curled hands doesn't sound very good I admit. :(

Re: Dribbling form mouth, and jerky head movements

I wonder if this wasn't kidney failure related because neurological problems can occur when there is too much urea in the blood. If that was the case then ipakitine should help improve those symptoms. Could you take a urine sample to the vets to check for protein and blood, which are often a sign of...

Re: Ipakitine dose for ratty on metacam?

What was your boy given metacam for and why does he need ipakitine? Does he have kidney failure?

I wouldn't worry about the younger ones getting it, it is quite safe, you can give up to two spoons a day for a rat who has advanced kidney failure.

Re: nutrical

It's alright, in that it's a high sugar/ calorie malt paste. But it doesn't have all the extra vitamins and proteins which make nutrical so great. If the rats in question are eating other things fine, then as a bit of a boost or a treat or for hiding meds in it's fine. It does have a lot of the sam...

Re: Layouts for stroke / heart problem victims

If you have ramps, cover them with over the knee socks :) It really can help with climbing if he has bad legs. I also make sure that everything is easy to reach, like put a water bottle a bit lower, use a low sided dish for food, you can also hang a hammock low by the floor, or put a sort of cuddle ...

Re: Vivitonin, stroke supps and med interactions

Thanks Alienrat - I couldn't find any interactions so at least we can confirm that :) Thank you for looking! I really hope the vivitonin works! I hope it works too, I have seen really good results with it! :) In fact one of our boys who had bad kidneys had a stroke and he was on both ipakitine and ...

Re: Vivitonin, stroke supps and med interactions

I had a quick look and couldn't find anything about vivitonin affecting the kidneys, apart from that the kidney problem should be addressed and treated, which it is with the ipakitine. I know that our vets never told us to withhold ipakitine when we started giving a rat vivitonin. I couldn't find in...
