Re: URGENT Rats eaten ..... (distressing)

Realistically I would say with no blood, it's more likely that they killed the mouse then later came back to eat it - had they ripped the leg off a live mouse then I would expect some blood (unless they licked it all up - but then would expect a trail outside of the cage where it escaped). I know of...

Re: My rats are abit boring and lazy.

Is the wheel big enough? I bought a large wheel for mine and they loved it as babies but outgrew it and stopped using it. I haven't bought them a new one as I'm not sure if there are any big enough for them to run comfortably in (if it would even fit in the cage)

Re: We've been upgrading...

Looks fab :) I found my Triple FNs pretty easy to clean out - though I'm only 5'3 (just about!) so I built them without the stands to make it a bit easier to reach the top. I've seen some guides on Goosemoose on how to modify the stands to still use the castors too (I just had it without, but it was...

Re: Unchewable plastic base?

If the Furet Plus base is like the Furet XL/Tower and has that lip at around 1" or so from the bottom, then what I did was place solid bits of wood or something (years ago now so can't remember exactly what I used, but it didn't soak up urine) onto this lip and then the full wire bases from the Crit...

Re: Stop the smell

Karly- the OP said in another thread that they are in a critter 1. Could be a big part of the problem then, especially if it's not a brand new cage (don't know if OP bought it new or secondhand/it came with the rats). The Terenziani ones seemed OK but the cheaper copies about nowadays just don't se...

Re: Pituitary tumour

Vet wasn't convinced as he's never seen a case and suggested a stroke instead. I'm not convinced with that diagnosis, it's possible but most strokes I've seen leave weakness or paralysis on one particular side :-? Convinced him to try steroids just incase so he gave him a quick acting injection and ...

Re: What do you do with a rat like this?

I had a very nervous boy who was terrified of rats and would run away but resort to aggression if cornered - neutered him with the idea of introducing him to females to see if that went better than male intros, and he ended up living as a group of 8 with 4 girls and 3 other neutered males. His behav...

Re: Stop the smell

Do you know the name of the cage they are living in? Some cages, despite being made for the purpose of being pet cages, aren't really that great in terms of keeping the pong down. Cages with plain metal bars are often guilty of soaking in the urine and retaining it which causes smells to hang around...

Re: Homemade Hammocks

I used to handsew all my rat hammocks, admittedly it's a lot quicker with a sewing machine! I just did rectangular shaped ones mostly, and a straight stitch - went over it twice to make sure it was strong enough. I used cotton tape to make little tabs, I made them as small as possible (mostly so the...

Pituitary tumour

Sadly after Squeak seemed to be recovering from his odd episode the other day, he's back to being reluctant to climb and with close observation I'm pretty sure it's a pituitary tumour. Off to the vets tonight but he's stopping climb at all (even with a cargo net arranged as a ramp to the next level)...

Just to update that he seems to be fine now, climbing about a lot more and back to doing his cheeky test bite of your finger to see if it's edible

Re: Rat reluctant to climb after drooling episode?

The blood wasn't from his chin, couldn't see any wound so presuming it was from his mouth - only a teeny amount. Not sure if he was choking - the drool came on suddenly, there was a fair amount for a couple minutes, then it eased off, with no retching - he just looked uncomfortable, like it was a bi...

Rat reluctant to climb after drooling episode?

2 days again Squeak had a bit of a funny episode, acting out of sorts. OH got him out of the cage and he was very quiet and cuddly (not him at all) and kept stopping to sort of "pull a face" - not like any retching I've seen but visibly uncomfortable, and on closer inspection he had a lot of drool a...

Re: Why do people dislike critters?

I have a Critter 3 for my boys and have been using it for quite a while now with no real gripes. I've had Critter type cages in the page so knew the common niggles, so I've - turned the doors the other way (had no problem with the boys pushing at them and getting stuck, though I do check the doors f...
