Re: warning for the squeemish making up straights!

Yep, in the protein mix I get made up by Merlin's Menu I get Silkworm, dried Earthworm, whole fish and the river shrimp as well as normal mealworms. All of them go down a treat, but they would do anything for the worms, which is bleh! To begin with, I didn't even realise they were worms, I thought i...

Re: fina card

We can put it in ours, along with food waste etc - It all goes in the brown bin (same for garden waste, cardboard, wood, etc)

Re: false pregnancy?

She doesn't look fat to me in that picture, although it's hard to tell from photos anyway. Have you made any changes to their diet recently that could account for a small amount of weight gain? Nesting wise, all of my rats nest, even the boys, and they definately aren't pregnant

Re: What markings??

I'd say he was a mismarked variegated also, and technically he's overmarked not undermarked as the white is the marking, not the colour.

Re: 100g weight gain in a day

I would be really worried if one did! It's normally a few g a day to begin with, and then up to about 10-15g a day for the last few days for an average to large litter, or at least in my experience anyway. I never use non-digital scales any more, they can really throw out weights.

Re: Ivermectin & Antibiotics

I also syringe it straight in after years of trying to hide it in food wherever possible - what is worse is when you mix it in something and they refuse it downright - that's a whole dose of baytril wasted, so you try something else, and they refuse it again, that's another dose wasted, etc etc. I'v...

Re: help

Not only is there the chance that he could impregnate her again immediately after birth, but male rats also have a higher incidence of infanticide and there's the possibility that if she gave birth with him in the cage, he could seriously harm or kill any or all of the babies while you were out. It'...

Re: An unexpected Litter

Most breeders will be quite happy to offer advice and support to you, and they might even be able to offer you cages to help you out, or take the litter from you if you aren't able to raise them yourself. Am I right in thinking the doe that is pregnant has been living alone and the 'female' rat was ...

Re: URGENT something happened to legs!!

The thing with PT is that the symptoms can be very subtle over time - often it'll start with just being a bit clumsy, sleeping a bit more, being a bit slow or unsteady in movement, and a lot of people wouldn't notice that or would put it down to another cause, what people really notice is when they ...

Re: URGENT something happened to legs!!

It's hard to say, he could have damaged them or maybe bruised the nerves or something... but I would see how he is in the morning and if he is still not using them I would try and get him into the vets first thing, if he is ok in the morning then just keep an eye on him - do his legs look normal oth...

Re: URGENT something happened to legs!!

A PT is short for a Pituitary Tumour - it is a tumour on the pituitary gland in the brain and one of the classic signs is loss of co-ordination and the inability to hold food with the front paws. This change can be a slow progression or can just happen suddenly, depending on the speed of the growth ...

Re: baby not gaining weight despite trying

Baby food is not really very good for building up rats that need to put on weight - they love the taste of it but in terms of nutrition it actually provides very little for rats - being built for human babies which grow much slower than rat babies and have a much slower metabolism. It may be that he...

Re: What to do about single baby.

If another mum pops, and that mum has enough babies that if you took a few she would still be left with enough to keep her lactating, I would definately foster a few over just to be safe. Don't go mad with how many babies you add - another 3/4 would be plenty as milk is produced on a demand basis an...

Re: What to do about single baby.

There's also still the possibility that she will continue to lactate as normal - there have been plenty of mothers who have raised a single baby successfully, so I would not be taking the baby away unless you start seeing signs that she isn't feeding him, and even then in past experience I have foun...
