Re: Rat hates water

In my experience, a rat hating water is completely normal. Mine will tolerate it, but that's it.

Re: rice - dry - can they have this?

Thank you! :D I *stupidly* made a "bean bag" for them with rice as the stuffing, and they tore it up for the rice... soo glad it's okay for them since they seem to like it so much!

Varnish - is it Safe?

Just found an old 30's-50's era radio that can be hulled out like any cabinet & turned into a cage, provided some shelving & a door is added. However, it needs a new wood stain & finish - anyone know if this will be okay for the rats? The pair I plan on homing in this particular set-up have never be...

rice - dry - can they have this?

As it says on the label :) Can rats have dried rice without it expanding and exploding in their tummies? :/ (As you hear of it happening to birds...)

Re: helping a chubby rat lose weight... suggestions?

not sure if you can find oxbow in your parts, but their rat mix is amazing, especially for keeping the weight down while providing top nutrition.

Re: what was the strangest thing you`ve found your rat eating?

lube  not even kidding, my girls chewed through the plastic & ate all of the contents. it was mint flavored, so i'll give them a bit of a leeway there...

Re: What my rats ate today.....

so far:

iceberg lettuce
a treat mix of: peanuts, sunflower & pumpkin seeds, & chow mein noodles. it's kind of my "ehh... this is a bit stale, throw it into the rat mix!" all-purpose treat mix. going to add some granola to it, too.

should be getting some baby carrots later today, too :)

Metal Cage Bases? & questions about builing your own...

My ratties desperately need a new cage, & I want to build it rather than purchase one. They currently have a cage w/ a pull out plastic tray, which I really like for ease of cleaning, but they've totally demolished it by being naughty gnawers. :angryrat: I know I can get a sheet of stainless steel &...

Re: Help with rescue please

This is what my vet recommends for switching an animal onto a new diet: (I know you've got her switched over now, but maybe it will help someone else in the future? :) ) it should take about a week to 9 days to fully make the change. start by adding just a few pellets of the new food, and then slowl...

Re: Older doe - safe to breed?

Thanks for the replies :hearts: I have been doing a lot of research, which is what lead me to be hesitant about her to begin with, though what I had read here and elsewhere about breeding from unknown lines said that it's controversial but the two main reasons to consider it would be exceptional tem...

Older doe - safe to breed?

I have an amazing doe (coco-dottie) who unfortunately has not been breed before (to my knowledge - she was adopted at ~5 months) who is now 13-14 months old. She has the best temperament and health I have encountered in a rat so far, and she is the reason I have decided to start breeding. I would re...
