Re: Mucky eyes

Rats can get porphyrin (red tears) when they are stressed or feeling ill. If it has happened very suddenly and the eyelids are getting stuck together then it is fairly likely to be an eye infection (eg conjunctivitis). You could use salt water (1 teaspoon salt in small cup of cooled boiled water) to...

Re: Lump in front of eye

hi Amanda, what did the vet say? One of my girls, Sugar, had a lump which was actually on her upper eyelid which got removed and was biopsied, it was a benign melanoma and it grew back, but never bothered her before the end of her life. Does Pippa's appear to be attached to eyelid or more inside the...

Re: HELP! Ear infection???

Well, the baytril dose is okay if she is a large doe, but ideally she needs the steroid too, regardless of whether it is ear infection or PT, as you can see in the treatment sections of both these articles. http://ratguide.com/health/neoplasia/pituitary_tumor.php http://ratguide.com/health/auricle_e...

Re: Could this be a possible tumour?

Can you have a ZGT in the end of the nose? no, the Zymbal's glands are located just between the eye and ear. It won't be linked to the mammary tumour either. It is definitely an abscess - that's why it is yellow and smells foul. There is a small possibility of being a tumour below the abscess, but ...

Re: Liver not working properly

It depends what is causing the poor liver function. Was he diagnosed by a blood test? So many things can cause liver problems, tumour or liver failure being the obvious worst, but infections could also cause abnormal blood results. Avoid giving him anything at all with any saturated fats (eg no yogg...

Re: Scab on the back of Hazel's neck

Was she treated for mites a while back? Did all those scabs clear up or not? It could be that one got infected. You can get medicated shampoo from the vet that can treat bacterial and fungal infections.

Re: HELP! Ear infection???

How old is she? It could be ear infection, stroke or PT. If she is less than a year old ear infection is most likely. If she is elderly, you can generally work out if it is stroke or PT by other symptoms present, eg is she much weaker on one side of the body than the other (hold each limb and feel t...

Re: stomach mass, please help

It could just be that he is a bit dehydrated from losing fluid from the diarrhoea. You could try to encourage him to drink extra - or give him something juicy like melon or cucumber (also lettuce is mildly diuretic, or dandelion leaves) - and then watch closely - just so you know for sure whether he...

Re: help not eatting

has he seen a vet yet?
A vitamin B12 jab can increase appetite, as can a steroid - but it's best he is examined to find the undelaying cause.

Re: Rex rats overheating? PMT?

It sounds like her seasons, also known as 'coming into heat' - if you examine her vagina at these times it may look quite open and even blue.. she sounds quite hormonal, bless her - you could try something like this to see if it makes a difference. It shouldn't be a problem as long as she is not bei...

Re: pituitary tumour?

I could be wrong - but it seems to me she could have had a fall injury, hitting her head on something in the cage, causing temporary lump and temporarily damaging her spine causing paralysis at the same time?

I'm afraid it's impossible to say without examining him really, sorry. Has the vet examined him recently and seen this mass?
