Re: Doxycycline - where can I get it?

You can get 20mg Ronaxan tablets for cats or sachets of Ornicure for birds. Usually 2.5-5mg per lb (therefore PurpleCatti's rat must be on 5mg a dose as 1/4 of 20mg = 5mg).

Re: Recurring Resp. Infection

It may be that the length of time she is on baytril isn't long enough. Ideally they should be on medicine still a week after the last symptoms disappear, but it could be needed longer than that.

Re: New facial abscess

I've just skim read but if you haven't already get a sample of the pus in the original abscess sent off so they can find out what antibiotic will be best to treat it, then try that antibiotic. 9 months of the same medicine which doesn't work is not helping anyone.

Luca in my avatar had a suspected zymbal's gland tumour: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=92720&p=924322&hilit=luca+zymbal#p924322

Its not a death sentence, he had it about a year.

Re: Sudden Head Tilt- Help!

Head tilts do come on as rapidly as that. As he has a new symptom you should take him back to the vets for probably an inner ear infection. The quicker he is treated with steroids and antibiotics the better.

Re: *urgent* Young male with genital issue?

Looks like his penis has got stuck, maybe when he was fighting. I'd use warm water on cotton wool and a little encouragement to put it back in place. I can't see an injury on the pic, their penis is that colour when it is extended.

Re: ermmm - odd shaped man bits ...

I don't believe there is anything in the natural world which is symmetrical but a big difference from one to the other might be of some concern. Do you have a photo? What do they feel like? You should be able to feel two balls (obviously!) of similar size, consistency and shape.

Re: long teeth

There is a pic of a normal rat's teeth on here: http://www.ratbehavior.org/Teeth.htm as you can see they're very long. You should not attempt to cut them yourself, she should see a vet first to rule out any other problems.

Re: how long should rattie teeth be?

Theres a pic of rats teeth on this page, figure 3: http://www.ratbehavior.org/Teeth.htm
They should be even in length, if they were too long or not growing properly you would know about it very quickly.

Re: weightloss and unsettled

I wouldn't wait, I would just take her to the vets now, rats don't lose that much weight just for no reason. Have you checked her teeth? She may be losing weight because she is unable to eat.

Re: Walking Backwards

I've seen a couple of rats do that, one had an inner ear infection and another had a damaged tail, both I guess relate to their balance. Might she have hurt herself on the fall? If it was only temporary and she has been completely normal since then I wouldn't worry about it.

Re: Fat or Underlying Issue???

Her weight sounds fine, but 550g and 250g would be fine for a female too, it just depends on how big she is structurally and where the weight is on her. Do you have a photo?

What are his symptoms? How is he being treated medically? Porphyrin is a sign of ill health and stress, not a symptom of getting old.

Re: Purple Spray for Bumblefoot?

I have a bottle of purple spray, its a horse antiseptic that my friend who keeps horses got for me because he knew a supplier of horse health products. Ask someone who has horses, a vet who treats large animals, a stables or a rescue who keeps large animals and they should be able to get you some. I...
