Re: Vet wants to knock out to pop Abscess

There really isn't any need for vet intervention for abscess's unless they are on the face. You can help draw it to a head by applying a warm compress to it a couple of times a day. If the area is hair covered, it's helpful to trim away the fur (nasal hair clippers are good for this - just don't ste...

Re: New water bottle

I've had rats that could use them Ok, but others who couldn't work them out. However, my guinea pigs wont use anything else - they can't work out normal water bottles!!!

Re: Burst Abcess what next?

Baytril is pointless, as it cannot penetrate abcsess's. Some people squirt it directly into the abcsess itself Question from complete ignorance, rather than a challenge  - do baytril burns only happen when it is injected under the skin, rather than applied topically, then? You use oral liquid...

Re: Burst Abcess what next?

Baytril is pointless, as it cannot penetrate abcsess's. Some people squirt it directly into the abcsess itself, but as long as you are keeping it clean, that should be enough. I use diluted hibiscrub to wash them out with, but you could also try purple spray.

Re: Calpol/ Calpobrufen - Suitable for Rats?

That is correct - rats have a much higher tolerance for paracetomal than we do.

Re: chicken raw or cooked

I would never give chicken raw - I had a rat with Campylobacter, and it's not pleasant, and he ended up with a permanent bowel problem after the infection cleared (which took 8 -10 weeks!) I have no idea how he got it, but I would certainly never risk raw meat with my rats.

Re: Aubiose

From what I've heard, Aubiose is practically impossible to get hold of now - unless you're lucky enough to find someone with old stock. It isn't being exported from France at the moment die to a shortage there.

My boys smell like biscuits!

I don't find them any smellier than girls, but I think it just depends on individual rats.

Re: Terrified - resp or tumour ? Video

As for the baytril dosage......I did give him 0.3 this morning as I was using some of the guides that I have seen on here. He wouldnt sit still on the scales but the numbers were jumping in the 800 - 900 range........as I said he is a big boy. :D Should I consider giving 0.4 ??? Thanks again. Sue. ...

Re: Terrified - resp or tumour ? Video

Baytril and Doxy should be given at least an hour apart, as they counteract one another.

Also, 0.2ml twice a day of Baytril sounds a bit low if he is a big boy.

Is it fishy? If so it's most likely a penis plug. You will need to pop his johnson out and take a look!

Re: Rat handling gloves?

I have a theory that neutering boys that show fearful aggression helps them too. I don't know if it's because it removes hormones that cause them to become more emotionally heightened on top of the fear or what, but the terrified puff-balls that I've neutered have always become much more relaxed (e...

Re: Head tilty girl - nothing is working

It's very common for head tilts to remain even after the infection has cleared. I certainly wouldn'nt have her put to sleep if she has no other symptoms. Rats adapt very well to disablities and can lead perfectly happy lives with a head tilt. I had a buck who got one at a few months old - despite tr...
