Re: bald privates ??

On cold days, my boys' balls are entirely covered with fur; on hot days, half of their package is bald and shiny and hanging out very much. My guess is they can pull their testicles closer to their tummy (keeping them in the furred part of their ball sac) or extend them more towards the tail, pushin...

Re: Tips for cleaning a urine 'crusted' base?

Slightly off topic, but vinegar is called azijn in the Netherlands. The vinegar you are looking for (in terms of cooking) is likely called tafelazijn (table vinegar). There are many different kinds available in every supermarket. There are even specialized Oil and Vinegar stores. :luck:

Re: Why do breeders inbreed?

This is what I learned from a course on laboratory animals It is possible for severely inbred animals to be perfectly healthy - even more healthy than randomly mated animals. In laboratory lines, after about six generations of heavy inbreeding in which the animals are selected only for reproductive ...

3. If she had been worried nobody had seen the sign she would have called later.

Which is a way of her saying she hadn't even been worried about nobody seeing the sign?

Re: Show your Cage.

One half houses three does, the other half houses two bucks. Which holds which varies with each cleanout. I used to keep one group of maximum five rats in the combined halves of the Tower, but then I was given the two males and I thought it might be a bad idea to mix them with the ladies The classic...

Re: How many of your rats have not had to go to the vets?

All of my past rats have been to the vets at least twice and all of them died from being PTS at the vet. Of my current rats, Kaatje (2 years 3 months), Brekke (1 year 8 months) and Jigga and Hova (4 months, have been here for three weeks) have never been to the vets; Mirrim (1 year 8 months) is in m...

Re: What rattie games do you play?

my boys love being with cat balls, the ones with bells in them, my OH and sid have developed an amazing trick that sid will play with the ball and my OH will go "bring the ball here sid" and sid will kick it over to him and if my OH says sid play dead he actually rolls on his back no joke...

Has she had any dietary changes or has she been on medication recently? Those are the only things I can come up with... it's very strange indeed!

Re: "rescuing" rats from petshops

The Fancy Rats forum has 8646 users. If half of them decide not to obtain their rats from pet shops anymore, and if they get on average two new rats per year, this means 8000 rats per year are not bought from pet shops. It's a very rough, probably very wrong estimation, but I do think these are sign...

Re: "rescuing" rats from petshops

Apart from visiting a rodent farm ( yep, this one ) I've had the 'pleasure' of visiting the back of a pet store where they bred their stock of fancy rats. The conditions were exactly those of a rodent farm (lab tubs, lab blocks, no enrichment, back-to-back breeding) except that the tubs were even mo...

Standard coated, top eared blazed berkshire agouti's and blues :hearts: I really like burmese, too. Ok, the burmese can be dumbo.

That'd make for a perfect group.

Re: Real or phantom?

someone who has 2 does from me had a buck castrated and kept him alone for over 2 weeks before putting him in with the ladies and both does had babies. The vet who operated checked him over and said she could find no trace of testicles and a second opinion gave the same, but after that, she was rat...
