Re: Another random question...Sorry

I would keep free ranging to fairly limited (no climbing up the curtains) but otherwise let him choose his limits, unless he's well dosed up on metacam, if he is he may not be aware of his own limitations

Re: Substrate- how necessary?

I scatter feed, but not on the base, i use a smaller tray as i didn't want to put food where they do the majority of their weeing. They're in furet plus' at the min, and someone else mentioned that extra space might reduce the problem, so hopefully. I'll have a look around at other substrates then,...

Re: what is going on?! (INTROS)

Most rats take to a bottle well, I would attach a coup cup (plus water) to the side of the cage and a water bottle and scatter there food on the floor (it’s better for them anyway, I do it all the time now). I wouldn’t put anything as a bed in there for now, though if there sleeping together tomorro...

Re: Substrate- how necessary?

Substrate is quite important, its there for a number of reasons, the first is to absorb the urine away from the surface so rats don’t have to walk in it and also reducing the smell. Solid surfaces without covering have been linked to bumble foot as the foot can end up sat in urine. Even if you wipe ...

Re: Biting

How old are they. It’s quite likely that your youngest are reaching the age where there hormones are kicking in a little, meaning that sudden;y they want to be alpha rat. Hence a little more serious fighting. It is likely that they will pass through this stage in the next month or two, but if it get...

Re: what is going on?! (INTROS)

I would keep them like that, it sounds like its going well, ignoring is a pretty good first reaction. Give them a night and they may be sleeping together.it may be worth going into a different room and doing something, I find this helps me cope better. You can still hear anything major and check (tho...

Re: what is going on?! (INTROS)

Lol that's not surprising either, sounds like you have a stubborn old ma there. I know how hard and scary it can be when there old, you worry so much about them making themselves ill. Is he a healthy fit rat other than his age. There will always be some level of stress in any intro the thing to reme...

Re: what is going on?! (INTROS)

The ‘head under teeth’ behaviour is a request to be groomed (or sometimes a demand) and this isn’t unusual in a rat who has been on it’s own for a while but is used to company. It’s also not unusual for a rat whose been on there own for a while to not understand what it is rat speak for. I would rea...

Re: Coat quality has become poor

Tooth brushes are fine for tail cleaning, just be very gentle and try and not brush against the fur / scales (unless you are really gentle and flicking off a loose scale). I actually like to use the rough section of a really cheap washing up sponge (the ones with the scourers on the back), if you we...

Re: Vet check

I never have, but to be honest after keeping rats for so long I am more likely to pick up on potential problems than my vets (something they would agree with too as I’ve often brought rats in that they’ve not been able to tell had problems). It is a matter of experience though, if you are inexperien...

Re: Feeding veg...

Keep trying and try offering a variety a day. At this stage if they’ve not been given very much variety growing up then there not going to want to try things straight away. Rats are often neuphobic, especially towards food, unless they’ve had a vaired and diverse start in life. There initial rection...

Re: Wilcos Rat Food

I wouldn't advise it if you keep boys, as it's very high in wheat and oats, plus the grass pellets are likley to be ignored as most rats won't touch them (and even if they do they don't get much from them as rats aren't designed to digest grass well). I also distrust protien from poultry meat genera...

Re: Trimming nails of nervous rat?

You could always try the 'brick in the cage' type approach, it's never worked for me (whose rats appear to beleve rocks and bricks are for weeing on) but i know it does for some people. Failing that i would try just going one at a time and taking of the very tip whilst she's out on her, don't as muc...

Re: Feeding veg...

Woozel is a silly rat, bananas are nasty nasty tasting food stuff :sickrat: . There’s quite a lot of stuff I’ve fed not on my list lol, I’m just too lazy to write it all out, and quite forgetful too. I think I’ve tried pretty much everything at some point or other if it’s safe, I’ll admit to getting...
