Re: Epilepsy exisits! Help me prove my vet wrong

Just thinking, do you have a copy of the NFRS Rat health book (you can buy it from teh NFRS website) - if you don't does anyone has a copy to hand? Mine is currently packed away, but there might be some info/medication doses in there...

Re: Your Favourite Variety of Rat?

My preferences have changed over time, but I liked black roans and British blues from the very first time I saw them. I've gradually got to like agoutis more and more, and they're one of my favourites now too. I really like black, and I prefer top ears & smooth coats. But in the end, I'm not rea...

Re: How long for Ivermectin to work?

Just to add to that, I tend to clip nails at the same time as I give Ivermectin. I find that blunt nails mean they don't break the skin so much when scratching, so they heal any scabs etc a day or two faster. If it's mites (invisible, main symptom scabs and scratches) then one dose tends to be enoug...

Re: Obese??

I don't think you need to drop Shunamite either, though you might want to cut out/down on some of the higher energy extra bits like pasta - I feed a cut back version of this all the time now, and have far fewer overweight rats than I used to, as at one stage mine were getting embarrassingly podgy. [...

Re: What do you keep your mix in?

I keep mine in a fliptop kitchen bin. I have had up to 45 rats to feed in the past, but we're down to about 20 now, so big containers are the way to go here :)

Re: Rspca confused?

The link won't open for me, but if they're at Taunton West Hatch RSPCA, then the 2 yr old pair is a neutered male with a female. They also have about 8 young neutered males as well. I don't know if it's now policy to neuter male rats, but I do know they routinely neuter male chinchillas there, as we...

Re: URGENT Rats needing homes in Somerset

These are a different set to the 20 in Exeter. It turns out there were 40 rats in a house in Bridport (Dorset) - basically someone bought two that were mis-sexed and they bred, and the person couldn't cope. This is now not so urgent, all the rats now have places in rescue in RSPCA Brent Knoll, a pri...

URGENT Rats needing homes in Somerset

I am no longer sure of the rules on rescue/rehoming rats on here, but this is potentially urgent. A friend has been in contact with the RSPCA today, as they've had to remove a number (20+ ??) of fancy rats from a house in Dorset where they have been roaming free - they are being brought to Somerset ...

Re: Hairless Rats - List of pet stores that stock them

No idea if they're still there, but not long ago Brent Knoll RSPCA (near Weston Super Mare) had two hairless does in.

Re: Roan/Husky

Most roans do go pale grey in the end, though some stay dark. It's usually possible to get a good idea how much they'll roan after they've completed their first moult. The more colour they keep then, generally the longer it'll last.

Re: rats and rented accomidation

I've had two or three rented places that were absolutely no pets at all, so I think it's probably best to check before you sign - most are more accepting than you might think, but I do think it's always best to make things official. The worst thing would be to have a rat phobic landlord throw you ou...

Yes, I've never had any trouble merging kittens from different litters at that age.

Re: Dove breeder

A couple of kittens from the litter are going to their new home via Clevedon, but they are only just 6 weeks - not old enough to show. So the others will be staying at home this time.

Re: Dove breeder

Yes, we are breeding them now, and also Russian pearls come up sometimes (in opinion even more beautiful than dove). Here's a Russian pearl from my current litter - they are lovely!
