Re: Lab Rats - advice please!

There have been quite a few ex lab rats shown over the years. They do very well usually and are not at all stressed by it, which people might expect they would be.

10mg/kg is what the NFRS recommend, but you can go higher.

Re: Lab Rats - advice please!

I had some Wistar Han strain lab rats and they were fine. Also very healthy and lived until they were 3. They even survived SDAV. Lab rats are mostly very tame although if they come from Charles River they can be a bit stroppy.

Re: Conflicting information

I've seen links in some American publications that class almost all foods we consider healthy for rats as harmful. This includes kale and other brassicas. It's based on misunderstood science. I use rabbit museli as a basic feed, also some horse feeds, Guinea pig and hamster mixes. I tend to rotate t...

Re: 'pedigree' names

I love coming up with pedigree names. I've used all sorts, flowers, stars, music tracks, characters in books and off the telly. Sometimes I have a theme for a variety. Silver fawns for instance tend to get 'orange' names like Goldcrest.

Re: argh! urgh! mites?fleas?ticks? moving itchy

They could be rat fleas. They are longer than cat fleas and don't jump quite so high. They are often a sort of browny colour too. If they are, Ivermectin doesn't work. You have to spray the cage and the surrounding area with a suitable anti flea spray. They will bite you as well as the rats. I have ...

Re: Best Probiotic

Our guts have their own 'good bacteria'. I would just stick to feeding a healthy diet. Your rats really don't need all that if they are. If they are on abs, that's different.

Re: mosquitoes

I've tried that, and they still bite me. Even with Deet . I am mozzy fast food. I have been bitten through jeans. The only place where I didn't get bitten was in South Africa. I had bought some over the counter repellant called Tabard and it worked a treat.

Re: Best Probiotic

The ones bought as yogurts etc are pretty useless, but the ones bought for use after abs can help prevent antibiotic associated diarrhoea. However, the bugs in the probiotic rarely colonise the gut longterm.

Same here!

Why do you use spring water? I worked in the water industry for a while and bottled spring water can be taken from a tap. Bottled mineral water is covered by the mineral water regs but they are not as strict as those for tap water.

I live about 400 metres from a lake in Kent and we have loads of mozzies from about April until October. They are very fond of the rats and they will bite them. I've seen it.

Re: Can rats get hayfever?

I've noticed for years that my rats get a bit sneezy in the Spring and the Spring cup show is notorious for sneezy rats. Rats are known to get asthma and the Brown Norway strain of lab rat has been used as a research model. Some years ago we had a breeder whose same rat got thrown off two shows in s...
