Re: Rats on a budget

Yup - on that note, if you have somewhere to do it, you can try growing anything :D May not be free but certainly won't cost much!

Re: Rats on a budget

Some of this may have been said, but... The best houses are cardboard boxes, I've never bought igloos etc, mine just get cardboard boxes - I always save cereal boxes etc (you'd be amazed how fat rats can squish into one!). It means they can have new ones nice and often if they kill them. Cardboard t...

Re: bath a rat

Most of mine have never had a bath - they clean themselves or are cleaned by other rats quickly enough, the only exception being my 2 pale rats who I showed and they were grubby, and my older boy who keeps getting mites and things - he also seems to get some sort of "build up" and has a shampoo/wash...

Re: Reusing Substrate

When I had less in my explorer I used to just clean out the dirty corner each week and do the rest every 2-3 weeks - I've still been known to do this with 14 in mine as they all use the same 2 corners if I need to clean inbetween or if I've run low on bedding. Where are you buying your cardboard tho...

Re: Urgent - sick rat

Just seen this - how's she doing today?

Unfortunately porphyrin and side-sucking can be symptoms of almost any problem with rats! Hope it's nothing serious

Re: Natural remedies/prevention for resp issues

Hmmm, not sure on the herbal side - my only thoughts on that are immunity boosting with echinacea and garlic - there's other things too that boost immunity too, but I cannot remember them. I've had good results with echinacea (in the rats - and I don't think they're too prone to believing in medicin...

Re: Lump on foot

Honestly to me that looks like when one of my rats has caught their foot on something/fallen off something etc. and twisted/sprained/banged it slightly - if it's not sore I'd not worry and just keep an eye, the only thing you need to watch for is if it gets infected (normally feels hot then IIRC), i...

Somebody nipping necks

I know this is a behaviour question, but that section throws up "general error" for me so thought other was the next most appropriate? Someone in my cage is nipping other rats necks - another neck abcess and finding nips on a couple of mine who are awake make me pretty sure about this. My cage is ma...

Watercress safety

Just wanted to check if watercress is safe to give to rats? Search is broken so I can't search to see

Also it's home grown cress, bits are flowering, any idea if the flowers would be safe or need to be removed?

Thanks :girly:

Re: silly idea?

The whole thing of neutering for convenience (as essentially that's what it is) is a awkward subject - some people are very against it due to any risks, some do it a lot. I have 5 current and 2 previous boys neutered though to mix with girlies, so you can guess which side I'm on ;) It may vary betwe...

Re: Some advice for my mum

I've done a few intros between girls - and actually that all sounds normal. It does sometimes seem to take a while for them to actually become very friendly with their new cagemates - I follow the no blood, no foul rule generally.. It sounds like Minsky is acting the dominant rat, for now at least -...

Re: New baby boy rats - question about puffing and shyness

When you say nibble - hard enough to break the skin, or gently? Most of the time nibbling from rats is part of how they bond - if you watch them together you'll see they do it when grooming, most of my rats nibble me! It's one way for rats to be affectionate  So I'd see that as a good sign, no...

Re: Introducing hairless rats to furry rats?

Just to agree really - I did an intro of a double rex girly to my hairy rats about a year ago now (sadly passed away now  ), at that point she was pretty much hairless - the scratches they get do show worse so it looks worse, in my girlies case one of the other rats back claws caught her and ri...

Re: Horrible intros , neutering an option?!

Not much help on the intros - the only intros of this kind I had failed, but that boy had been alone his whole life and while he didn't mind freeranging, he was just too old I think to learn to share a space with other rats! But if your boy has been alone only a short time, intros I'm sure will be p...
