Re: Entertaining a lone rat

I think the smell issue is a very relative point Betterstar - I hadn't thought of that at all. The reason I asked in the first place is because Jasper and Carrot were so close, completely inseparable, and I just wondered if seeing the body would help him process the loss better, but perhaps it would...

Re: wanted to share a miracle food to go with septrin :)

Thanks!
Another good one for septrin I've found is banana and oat baby cereal (think it's a Heinz one) - although this seems to work for all meds for all my rats!

Re: Entertaining a lone rat

Thanks guys, I've made him a sock buddy but he seems to be largely ignoring it. He also seems quite aloof with me, not wanting as many as cuddles as usual but I guess that's to be expected. He's also lost his appetite a bit but I'm bribing him with lots of yummy stuff. Didn't have chance to show him...

Re: do rats mourn?

They definately do. My Jasper was PTS on Friday, leaving Carrot (Jasper's brother) on his own. He's very withdrawn, has lost his appetite a bit and isn't as interactive as he normally is. Luckily I'm getting 3 kittens hopefully sometime next week, fingers crossed this perks him up again! I'd definat...

Ditto the banana baby food - that what Carrot is having his doxy in at the minute, it's the powdered Heinz banana and oat one :)

Re: Entertaining a lone rat

Thanks for your replies. I'll show Carrot the body in the morning, just so it clicks into place for him. He seems a little distant with me tonight, not wanting many cuddles, but I guess he's just confused.
Hopefully there'll be some new babies around soon to distract him.

Entertaining a lone rat

Hi guys, I've unfortunately had 2 of my rats PTS this week - Stuart for a PT and Jasper just this afternoon for a chronic resp infection. This has left Carrot on his own, my poor boy, and he has always been so dependant on Jasper since they were babies. I'm on the lookout for male kittens in rescue ...

Re: Another persistant resp problem

Thanks guys :D
He had another gasping attack last night and some steam therapy seemed to help, but this morning after taking his bronchiodilator again he seems to be improved, breathing is still laboured but silent.

Re: Urgent - severe respiratory distress

He seems to have calmed considerably over the course of the night, but his breathing is still pretty shocking. He's been on baytril/doxy for 10 days now and there's been no real improvement, he just seems to keep going downhill. Any idea what to ask for when he goes to the vets again? I'm at a loss,...

Urgent - severe respiratory distress

As some of you may know, Jasper's been ill with a serious resp infection. He's on doxy/baytril, bisolvon, and a bronchiodilator. He's also had 2 frusimide injections, one yesterday and one today, and a steroid injection today. He's in severe respiratory distress currently - I can't get any of his me...

Re: Another persistant resp problem

Jasper had another frusimide jab and a steroid jab this morning, along with a course of bronchiodilator, and there's been a small improvement on this morning breathing so fingers crossed!

Another persistant resp problem

Ok - took Stuart, Carrot and Jasper to the vets about 8 days ago as they had all begun with resp symptoms (Jasper and Carrot had begun with the symptons first and had already had a course of baytril which didn't improve them at all, and then Stuart began with similar symptoms). They were started on ...

Re: cardboard bedding supplier nottingham

I'd still suggest getting 2 rats - they can still be just as attached to you if you spend lots of time with them one-to-one as a lone rat would be, but they'd just have each other to play with when you weren't there. The rat will still miss the company of other rats if he lives on his own, as he wil...

Re: Odd behaviour

Thankyou, Mary. He's spent most of the morning sat on my knee whilst I prop him up to groom - trying to make himself presentable for the vet's because he's covered in most of the baby food he had last night! Thanks for all your suggestions - it was because you suggested PT that I read up more on it,...
