Re: Has any one had any experience with this cage?

There's some Explorer's in the Marketplace in Lancashire. Don't know if you will be passing but thought I'd point it out anyway.

Re: Bleeding from ear?

So glad to hear that it's just an ear infection! Sorry if I paniced you with talk of ZGT but my assumption was if you had all the facts you and your vet would be able to decide between you if that's what he had and get a diagnosis quicker.

Hope he makes a fast recovery :luck:

Re: Charity Shop raid; Castle toy and toddler farm toy

Looks great. The rescue I volunteer at furnishes all the cages like this as we don't have the money to buy expensive stuff to fill them and we have a charity shop on site so anything that doesn't sell/can't sell gets sent to us to use.

Re: Bleeding from ear?

Hey, thanks again for your reply. if it was ZGT, what would the lump feel like? Would it feel like a tumour? (just because you said swelling), there is no swelling or anything, but he does have a little thing on the bottom of his jaw, it feels almost like a scab rather than a lump though and feel e...

Re: Bleeding from ear?

I'm posting from my phone so I can't get you links but try Rat health guide. If you google Zymbal's Gland Tumour Rat health guide you should get some articles. Basically it is a tumour of the Zymbal's gland which is located just under the ear along the jawline. It is accompanied by an abcess on top ...

Re: Bleeding from ear?

I don't want to alarm you but that can be one of the first signs of a ZGT. You may be lucky and it's just an ear infection but either way a high dose of antibiotic such as Synulox is a good idea. Does he have a swelling under his ear on his jawline? Might be a good idea to contact the breeder if it ...

Re: Metal trays for SRS

Thanks bicstar. That's really interesting. I was going to change as everyone who has SRS's say how much better they are even those who have both. I also thought that having more horizontal bars would be useful. I think maybe I'm starting to change my mind as I do like my Explorer. Hmmm :-?

Re: Age of elective spays

Definitely before 9 months http://www.ratbehavior.org/SpayTumorIncidencePetRat.html . I've not spayed as routine yet but we've decided to routinely spay any young healthy rescues we get from now on. I've had 3 spayed so far and 2 were due to hormonal behaviour (they were unable to live with other ra...

Re: Essegi Alicia?

Looks ok but doesn't say what the actual height of the cage is so the sizes are slightly misleading :-?

Is she on antibiotics at all? If not I would suggest 7-10 days of baytril just in case.

Re: Am I missing something??

Well done for doing your research first! - Cage from ebay, 62 x 62 x 78 cm high (so apparently big enough for 5 rats although i am only getting 2) which includes water bottle, feed dish, tube, platform and house. The tray looks nice and deep, and the bar spacing is half an inch. I', guessing this is...

Re: Chubbo's Lump Removal

Ok, chubbos armpit where the lump was removed now seems a little swollen, is this normal?? Yes. When a lump is removed the space which the lump once occupied can fill with either water or blood. Most people just leave them and they tend to get reabsorbed on their own. If you get it drained they ten...
