Re: New and frequent choking episodes

Thanks, I have an appointment this afternoon. If they find nothing physically wrong presumably then this suggests a neuro issue. In which case would it be kindest to pts? It seems unfair to have her choking so frequently and essentially not able to eat nearly enough food :( Any thoughts? If they fin...

Re: URGENT LINK TO RAT SWING PLEASE

I just can't believe what's happening...I spent all night worried about Iris then this morning we have found our old man Pascoe dead in the cage  Life officially sucks at the moment.

Re: URGENT LINK TO RAT SWING PLEASE

It feels totally helpless not having a vet I know and trust. If I was in Plymouth I'd have had her investigated by now or taken her for an emergency investigation tonight. There aren't many rat people in Norwich so I haven't had any really good recommendations. So I'll have to phone my friend's vet ...

Re: URGENT LINK TO RAT SWING PLEASE

I'm setting up a hospital cage to put in our room overnight. My friend has given me a phone number for her vets who she says are good (she has cats though) and I'm gonna call them tommorrow to ask about their rat experience and if I'm happy book iris in for investigation. This choking is getting tot...

Re: URGENT LINK TO RAT SWING PLEASE

I've swung her twice, she at least now seems to have some air entry but is doing major open mouth gasping like she is really struggling to dislodge it. She only had 2 licks of soya pudding :(

Re: New and frequent choking episodes

Thanks for the reply, if she stops choking for long enough I'll try her on a drop of metacam. We were wondering if a whiff of gas and a quick scope to look in her mouth and throat might be worth while in case there is something causing this. I just need to try and find a new vet, if I was in Plymout...

Re: New and frequent choking episodes

Thanks for the love  It's definitely choking, she is doing the classic wretching and drooling and pulling her ears back. The first time it was on some soft/soaked food so I thought it was too thick so I haven't fed her that again. Then it was on meds with Nutrical and soya pudding, so I stoppe...

Re: New and frequent choking episodes

Wondering if maybe it could be a problem with her teeth meaning she can't grind stuff properly? She has also lost a little weight recently. If anyone could shed any light I'd be very grateful, she has choked at least 3 times today alone...and those are just the ones we've witnessed :o. After she's c...

Re: Very vocal rat...what does it mean?!?

Beri - I don't know much about his background but Jackie mentioned things were 'out of control' so I imagine he was in a large group and maybe it was a bit chaotic which would explain why he is wary but also feisty I suppose. He is over a year old, maybe around 14 months. I guess because he often to...

Very vocal rat...what does it mean?!?

One of my new rescue lads is very vocal. Sometimes he squeaks when I pick him up or during intro scuffles, all very normal etc. He is a little wary so I am giving him some tlc to socialise him etc. But where I am confused is sometimes he toots and squeaks when nobody is anywhere near him, it's almos...

New and frequent choking episodes

Iris has started choking on a very regular basis. She first did it quite badly a couple of weeks ago and it took her several hours to clear it. She then developed a chest infection and so is on doxy/Baytril. But she now has small choking episodes quite often when she is having meds (mixed with soya ...

Re: Opinions or advice needed on if 2PTS please

Is your vet quite rat savvy? If he's still well in himself, active and eating and drinking I'd get a second opinion from a vet with lots of rat experience (or one who is at least willing to learn!). What ABs did he have for the resp infection? It's also sometimes worth trying a med called Fortekor i...

Re: Bumble bloodbath...help!

Sorry I can't offer advice as I have no experience with bumblefoot but thought I'd bump this up for you to see if someone can come along to help. Scritches to your boy :luck:
