Re: How bad does it have to get before castration?

Dylan sounds like he could do with a trip to the nad-fairy. Around 8 months is about the time male rats get hormonal problems, sometimes it dies down sometimes it escalates. If he's becoming difficult to handle for fear of getting bitten, then he definitely needs castrating. It should calm him down ...

Re: First intro's - need advice

It sounds like you shouldn't have much problem with Simon, bless him. Hope things have gone alright tonight. I remember when I first got Tasmania she spent the first night screaming her head off at any rat that came near her, in the end I had to put her in a carrier on her own so I could sleep as I ...

Re: First intro's - need advice

p.s. it might take a week or 2 for Kamina to calm down after his castration, and make sure he goes on some antibiotics after the operation, as i've had my fair share of castration site abscesses.... Btw, if Charlie just keeps avoiding Viral in the Ruffy after a day or two, I would advise putting the...

Re: First intro's - need advice

Oh dear, naughty Kamina! Sorry your OH had to be on the receiving end. Hope he's alright! I've had squealing rat issues before, but if it were me, I would leave Viral and Charlie together in the Ruffy with no hidey holes or hammocks, make sure you have 2 food bowls and 2 water bottles (if pos...

Re: Rat pulling up cover during freerange..

Oooh, I just re-read what I put, and realised I worded it awfully. What I meant was still having the sheet at the bottom, but with a blanket to hide in too? I have no idea if this will stop her digging up the sheet, but it's a distraction? I don't think she's going to stop, methinks she's just tryi...

Re: Rat pulling up cover during freerange..

OK trying the blanket idea, i've trapped the edge under the pen where they keep digging excessively. Will see how that goes.

Rat pulling up cover during freerange..

For freerange, I have a correx pen and i line the floor with a sheet to make sure the carpet doesn't get covered in pee and poops, but some of my rats (Tasmania in particular) spend most their time tugging the sheets at the corners of the pen and if they succeed in getting an edge, burrowing under t...

They only had the one size in when I went, but it's no problem because both my boys and my girls can slip through it easily.

Catfood Mansion

I would like to share a little project I'm working on at the moment, the Cat food Mansion! My mum has a lot of cats and with the arrival of 3 new kittens means a lot of cat food. We use pouches for the kittens and get through a lot of boxes, so I started to glue and tape them together and so far thi...

Crinkle tube from Wilkos

Has anyone seen these for sale before or are they relatively new? I picked one up for £1.75 from Wilkinsons and the rats love it. Its advertised for hamsters and rats, and even though it looks a little small its still big enough for my boy rats to slip through easily. In the following picture i've s...

Re: Huge Mammory lumps

Rosetta was pts this morning at 11am. Gone for cremation this time as I couldn't face another burial this soon.
Coming back home, the girls cage is so different without her, the silence is almost off-putting after hearing her constant wheezing....

Re: Huge Mammory lumps

Thank you Bazu and Biscut. I'll be making the phone call tomorrow to get her to the vets. Given her some peach as a bit of a treat and she wolfed it down, although she had to waddle and re-ajust herself once she had eaten half the bowl. I'll get mum to help me make some yummy porridge for her as a s...

Huge Mammory lumps

I have a bit of a query regarding Rosetta, one of my girls, i'm hoping someone on here will be able to give me some good advice. She's had mammary lumps crop up since March, as so did Possum but unlike how Possum only had one pop up which was removed successfully in April, Rosetta had about 7 indivi...
