Re: Help! our little girl hates to be handled?!

Another cage-mate is an absolute must, as rats are very social and need same-species company. I'm sure she'll be a lot more confident once you get her a cage mate. Also pet shops are not the best place to get rats from, as most pet shops get their 'stock' from rat farms where they're kept in appalli...

Re: Boys with abscesses forming under neck

I would say it should only take a week to burst; get it checked at a vet it might be a lump.

Regarding my boys they've been on baytril for 2 weeks, all healed up and no sign of any return of abscesses so i think i've fought it off. Fingers crossed.
If it does return, i'll mention Synulox to the vet.

Re: Methinks Serenity might have pneumonia

Serenity was pts this morning at 9.14am, she had stopped eating/drinking and was very dehydrated by this morning. The meds just weren't helping...
I brought her body back home with me this time, as we have a big back garden to bury her in.

Re: Methinks Serenity might have pneumonia

There's a lot of info about treating heart failure in old threads, which should turn up with a search :) I remember Vic posted some really helpful advice on a thread I made last year about my George and his heart trouble - I think he was on something like a quarter of an Enacard tablet and a quarte...

Re: Methinks Serenity might have pneumonia

2 weeks in on baytril, took Serenity back to the vet today. The antibiotics had some effect in that she wasn't getting worse, was still eating and drinking and her weight is still stable around 280-300g, but she's not been getting better either. The vet said there was still a lot of fluid on her lun...

Re: Boys with abscesses forming under neck

I think it spouts back to some rescues my ex-housemate took in actually, since Balthazar had 2 neck abscesses before he was pts due to pt and one of the other rescues had similar abscesses too. I took in Balthazar into my group so I think that might've been the initial cause! The vet did say that wh...

Alright, thank you. I'm just used to baytril being the all-round antibiotic for most infections....

Re: Boys with abscesses forming under neck

I wouldn't expect it to spread outside of the group. My understanding is they probably spread through poo so they'd need to be in close contact. Ahh right thank you for that. I'll speak to the vet on Monday about it when they're open again. Good job I only have a group of 3 boys I guess >_>; I do h...

Re: Boys with abscesses forming under neck

If it's happening to more than one rat it's likely you've got a bacteria infection in the group. It might be worth getting the pus tested and then blanket treating everyone with a suitable antibiotic while thoroughly disinfecting the cage to see if that gets rid. :luck: Wouldn't this mean the girls...

Boys with abscesses forming under neck

Both Kamina and Viral have developed small to medium sized abscesses under their necks, Viral has had it before as well as Simon but this is Kamina's first. Is it just a coincidence that they all seem to be forming them around the throat or is this something that happens to boys? I know a friend is ...

Re: Methinks Serenity might have pneumonia

Is she on baytril alone? For pneumonia you want to do combos, preferably including penicillin to start with (what else depends on vet preference and diagnostic specifics). You need to give a massive wallop with ABs. My vet has suggested it and seems to think it works well. He does it at the surgery...

Re: Methinks Serenity might have pneumonia

If it is pneumonia then... then... oh my goodness, total mind blank, I think I mean nebulising. Nebulising might help. My vet has suggested it and seems to think it works well. He does it at the surgery but I think he said something about prescribing me some sort of inhalor so I could do it at home...

Re: Methinks Serenity might have pneumonia

Vet trip went well, and the vet even agreed that my suggestion of 0.15ml twice daily was accurate for her weight!! They were very generous with the baytril and probably have enough for 3-4 weeks if necessary, or to up the dosage myself if needed. Not only that it cost under £15 for consult + meds. T...

Methinks Serenity might have pneumonia

Serenity has been looking a bit down lately, one day she'll seem ok, the next day like she's struggling a bit.. She's a very light girl (around 300g) but she is still eating and drinking and I couldn't hear any noise on her chest so I thought it might just be down to her age as she's 1 year 8 months...

Re: Lightweight girls not eating much :s

As I have only just moved to the Cumbria area, I've not gotten them registered at any vets yet, I did take them to the one my mum goes to in Gosforth over a year ago when they had mites and hadn't a clue at that point and neither did the vet, it wasn't til I got back to Nottingham that it was identi...
