Re: First time rat owner, would appreciate some tips!

You can never have too many cordboard boxes in my opinion, never mind the plastic igloo houses my boys love having a box to sleep in/ chew.

Re: Holiday for rats - is Hamster cage ok?

A 'standard' hamster cage would vary according to people's opinions. Most sold in the shops are very small therefore would stop the rats from moving around much at all for the time they were in it, for example if an adult rat was 20cm long sat still (not including tail) then a cage that was only 40c...

Re: Holiday for rats - is Hamster cage ok?

Depends on the size of the hamster cage. As most are too small even for a hamster I don't think i'd be happy to keep my boys in anything smaller than a Hamster Heaven/ Ruffy/ Mary sized cage even short term

Re: To much or To little

Pop them on the scales and see how heavy they are, maybe you just have lean muscly boys. My two stash all their food really fast then pull sad faces as if I'm starving them. they are fatties though

Re: Nuts - how often?

Are gremlin ears the same as rawhide chews? I've given my boys the crocodile things the petshop sells before but I was thinking of getting them a rawhide chew when i go to the shop this week

Re: Nuts - how often?

I give my boys nuts when I have them, a few every week as they are quite high in fat. Have you tried something like filling the toe of an old sock with treats and bits of paper and hanging it up to make a ratty pinata? Or putting something tasty in a closed boy for them to destroy? Just to keep them...

Re: what do you think of this cage worth buying?

It looks ok, the access looks good with those 3 doors. It looks big enough for a few rats although personally I'd want a minimum of 80cm x 50cm floor space but that cage does have lots of height, I'd be tempted to remove some of those shelves and put in lots of hammocks and climbing stuff.

Re: I Love It When...........

I just had a special moment with Charlie, he's very skittish, hates cuddles but just now he climbed my leg onto my lap, licked my hands, had a good sniff of me and jumped off. In the 15 months I've had him he's never licked me

Re: Any strict NO NO's regarding rat feeding?

I know bucks can't have citrus fruits but I can never remember why. And obviously basic common sense rules apply like stuff with lots of salt/fat/sugar isn't good for them so healthy people food only.

Re: the smell!

How old are your boys? Mine got less pongy as they reached adulthood. I clean them out every 10 days now (2 boys in a Critter 2) and they only get a little whiffy the last couple of days. I remove wee-soaked bedding from their sleeping area in between though and give them fresh. Over cleaning can ca...

Re: Can rats and rabbits be introduced?

Sorry but there's been several threads along these lines lately, at least one of them being a wind up rather than a genuine question for advice.

As we've said, it'd be putting your rats at risk of injury and they wouldn't get any benefit from interaction so it'd be better to have seperate playtimes.

Re: What is THE best rat food diet

I'm finding this thread interesting because I'm not happy with the fact that my boys are getting only nuggets and veggies at the moment and I'm wanting to start making my own mix sometime this year as I'm hoping to increase my rat numbers in the summer. Can anyone recommend a really basic mix? Also ...

Re: Cats as company for rats

Glad to hear it. Have you had any luck finding her some cage mates yet? Hope you find some friends for her soon then she'll have some company of her own kind.
