Re: Good cage?

It's a very subjective question, but if you do a search for SRS or Explorer you should find plenty of threads comparing them :)

Scrapping is very normal, so unless you're seeing regular proper fights, unsettled rats and/or injuries, I wouldn't worry too much :teen:

Re: Poorly Rat

It sounds like she's got an inner ear infection. These need strong combined antibiotics and steroids to clear the infection and this needs to be given for several weeks to be sure it is fully treated. Do you know what meds she's been prescribed?

Re: my rat has started to bite everything!

It sounds like he's exploring his boundaries. He'll probably grow out of it but some gentle dissuasion by pushing him away and telling him 'no' when he goes too far should help.

Re: Newbie - rat selection help

Welcome to the forum. :D

All pet rats are actually the same breed and colour and markings don't affect personality. As Golgotha_tramp said, the best way to ensure happy rats is to get them from a good breeder or rescue. :luck:

Re: Blood around Nose?!

What you can see is unlikely to be blood but a normal secretioncalled porphyrin. She should wash it off soon -had she just woken up? When rats are poorly you will often see larger amounts of porphyrin so it can be a good indicator thatsomething's up, but ifit's only a little (like in your pic) and t...

Re: What do you do with a rat like this?

I would neuter. He sounds a lot like our Bal who was a bundle of screaming stress around our other boys. Wish we'd neutered him sooner as he was so much more settled afterwards.

Re: Nose Bleeds

We had a pair of brothers who suffered nose bleeds. We used to try and keep them calm on our laps and hold a cold cloth against their nose (without blocking them). One had a massive bleed at the vets once and even then we had to wait it outas there's unfortunately no way to stop them. Hopefully they...

Re: Collecting urine samples

Ours have always obliged on the vets table

If you needed one at home you can put them into a small carrier with no bedding and wait. Samples are best taken fresh usually though.

Re: Playing games with rats

Playing race up and down the stairs (with several rats and a person at the top and bottom of the stairs to call/ rattle yoggie pot) is usually fun for a fair while. A treat ball on the floor usually keeps them occupied once they've figured it out. The carrot patch rabbit toys are also good - hide tr...

Re: how are you and your ratties keeping cool today?

We're fortunate that our living room has no direct sunlight and so never gets especially hot, no matter how scorching it is outside 8) We are sat with the backdoor open at the moment to let some air flow through though to stop it getting too stuffy.

Re: Bumblefoot

Does anyone have any decent pictures of bumblefoot. http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b300/thedafftone/Rats/jay/jay008.jpg If it is bumblefoot, then keeping both it and the cage clean is a must. We've not found ABs to help, but you can get various topical treatments that sometimes help. It's a bit ...

He definitely sounds like he would benefit from being neutered. Having too many hormones canmake life very stressful for a buckand once they'vebeen removed they areable to calm down and enjoy life. :luck:
