Re: Rats are losing their teeth

Do I change AB's? ( they are tolerant to baytril, and zithro had no effect) If the Ronaxan is what works for them no, I wouldn't change it, keeping the resp problems at bay at this stage I think is more important than any potential tooth problems the Ronaxan may cause; those tooth problems can be c...

Re: RR Soft food mash

Old rats can often get kidney failure which makes them feel a little nauseous, which can put them off there food a bit. This type of nausea is caused by uraemia. Uraemia is a toxic condition that will eventually be fatal if left, it is a build up of toxic waste products in the blood stream which ca...

Re: Rats are losing their teeth

Thanks Ratgirl, I only asked this because this is the only thing both the boys have in common. They have had numerous courses of Ronaxan before and it has never had this effect on them Tetracyclines actually have a compound effect, once they are bound to bone, they stay that way and are never remov...

Re: Rats are losing their teeth

They are not litter mates, the only thing they have in common is that they are both on ronaxan for chronic respiratory issues, could this be causing this?? The tetracycline group of antibiotics, of which Ronaxan is one, do bind to calcium which is why it's usually recommended that they are not fed ...

Re: squint tail

I was hoping you'd come along soon! I just had time for a quick reply! We wondered about dislocation but she can still actively move her tail - would she be able to do that if it was dislocated? Yep ... dislocation doesn't really affect movement as such, just the positioning of the tai...

Re: squint tail

Tail dislocation ... can happen if they fall off something and land right on their bum squashing the tail base, it dislocates the tail and then they end up with a twisty tail that sticks out at a funny angle and/or twists around in a spiral, is permanent but causes no long term issues, seen it a few...

Re: Roan with gray & brown fur?

Black roans can develop rusting just like other black rats, I've seen it on a couple of black roans upon arrival here. It's usually related to hormones and/or diet.

Re: Bramble - Thin fur, swollen cheeks - any ideas? :)

Lol! Oh well, I'll have to mention it next time I'm in there And get some clavaseptin/synulox instead  If it is facial abscessing, you should give an extended course of antibiotics too, because they are very stubborn and often come back, so I wouldn't use less than a 4 week course for facial a...

Re: Help for vet

His teeth are fine, nice yellowy brown colour nd sharp (as the vet found out) Are they supposed to be loose? well not loose but moveable as they seemed to me like they splt in the middle a bit The lower incisors can 'split apart' and have a gap in the middle of them because the lower half of the ra...

Re: Lumps.....Abcesses,old bite wounds or something else???

Okay, thank you for the extra info ... it's difficult to say anything about whether these lumps might be benign or malignant ... it's impossible to tell by looking/feeling them, and even positioning doesn't really give much of a clue in rats because their mammary tissue is so extensive and covers su...

Re: Calpol/ Calpobrufen - Suitable for Rats?

I think on a saturday, I'm not sure if I rang the out of hours number they would be to happy about me asking what pain medication they got.. I would try them and see what they say ... you don't have anything to lose by asking, and it would be much better if you could find out what she had be...

Re: Bramble - Thin fur, swollen cheeks - any ideas? :)

Really great vet, she said to let her know how Bramble gets on because she hasn't used the Convenia on rats before so obviously if it works really well it's something they can use for abscesses in the future. Your Vet should have called the manufacturer before using Convenia in a rat. See info here...
