Re: Will this poison Milly?

You don't need to scrub everything down. The spot on stays in the system, so each time a mite or louse bites the animal it will die. Mites live on rats all the time anyway - sometimes they just flare up. You may need to re-treat her, especially if you didn't get much on the skin. Although it does al...

Yes - pasta should be for a rare treat only, unless you are trying to fatten them up.

Yes - I think we all do! I don;t use it too much anyway, as I always find it very dusty!

Rats are so hard to feed - my guinea pigs are soooo much easier!

Re: Can ratties spread illnesses to humans?

There are of course other bugs that rats can pick up that can then spread to humans. I had a rat with Campylobacter, and had to be very careful when handling him and cleaning him out. We have no idea how he got it. But there is a slight risk from keeping ANY animal, and it's probably more likely tha...

Re: Can ratties spread illnesses to humans?

Well I can't speak for all the cases, but one lady was hospitalised and was extremely ill, as she was originally misdiagnosed. And I believe her rats were kept inside, not in a shed.

Re: Can ratties spread illnesses to humans?

Sorry - Wiki was the first page I found on Google - It was actually mentioned on the NFRS forum by someone pretty knowledgable about bacteria! But yes - it is very rare, but apparently becoming more common than it once was.

Re: Can ratties spread illnesses to humans?

There have been several cases of Rat Bite fever reported by rat fanciers in the past - I was recently advised NOT to let rats lick around your mouth because of this. It is rare though, but worth bearing in mind.

It could also be that the vet didn't stich up the inguinal canal properly, meaning that some of hisinternal organs could have slipped into the scrotal sack. I would get him back to the vets to check.

Septrin is normally the best AB for UTI's, although some vets don't like prescribing it. Many don't keep it in stock - I had to get a prescription for the paedeatric suspension and get it at the chemist.

6 bucks are fine in one half. In some ways bucks don't need as much room as does as they don't tend to do much.

Re: septrin dosage

ah sorry, i meant 0.1ml. so does this mean it will basically be having no effect at all? It depends what concentration the medication is. When Vinny had it, I was giving 0.5ml of childrens syrup a day, but when I asked about the dosage on here, nobody really seemed to know. It did cure the problem ...

Re: Should I find a new vet?

Jillybean is right - an abscess on that area, and on such a young rat, may well have been a sign of something nasty going on. I don't think your vet is to blame at all.

Sorry for your loss.

1ml seems quite a lot. Or do you means 0.1ml?
