Re: reputable rat breeders in surrey

[ i have emailed breeders@nfrs.org three times and have not recieved a reply The person who deals with this normally is away and I am covering it. I only get time to log on and sort through the e-mail every couple of days, and have cleared all the e-mails tonight. You should have had a reply by now...

Re: Beapher Spot On

If it's mites you do not need to treat the others as all rats have them anyway. It's only if a rat reacts to them that they need treatment. And do NOT massage it in - Ivermectin is nasty stuff that you do not want to be getting on your skin! Just put the contents onto the back of his neck and use th...

Re: No Progress with the Angry Babies :(

I wouldn't feed my breeder babies through the bars of the cage and certainly not rescues because they start to think that everything coming through the bars is food and can bite without even smelling it, which can lead to big problems if you have visitors or young guests (my nephew posts everything...

Re: Best product to use to neutralise territory?

In my experience, rats are really far too intelligent to be fooled by these tricks. I have never had any more success with intro's if I have used vanilla, scrubbed cages etc, then if I just bung them all in the cage together! If they are going to get on, they will do so regardless of "territori...

Re: Lost another girl

Myco will not cause deaths among your rats like this. I suspect you have got a case of SDAV or Sendai amongst your rats, and you should be blanket treating them all with AB's to minimise further losses. For clarification on Myco, have a read of these: m m So, it was a virus then? It seems that myco...

Re: I think I may be losing one of my boys... help?

It doesn't always cause the eye to bulge - it can just cause red eyes too. However, if you think the eye was scratched this could simply be a severe resipratory infection, possibly puemonia. You are doing everything you can. If he isn't eating, it would be a good idea to see if you can get some flui...

Re: I think I may be losing one of my boys... help?

Well firstly, the plug is nothing to worry about - some male rats don't clean themselves very well, especially if they are off colour, so just keep an eye on it.

The eye symptoms combined with the respiratory issues could indicate SDAV. Has he been in the same air space as your other rats?

Re: urgent help please is this choking?

Don't worry too much - it looks very distressing, but 99% of the time they will sort it out themselves. I've seen loads of rats choke over the years, and all of them have been fine within a few hours.

It sounds like he's feeling better now anyway.

Re: Was this myco?

Thanks. I definately read online somewhere that it was contagious and could be passed through sneezing and also that it can spread to the uterus? Yes - it is contagious, and can be passed like that, but 99% of rats have it already, and the likelyhood of them all suddenly becoming ill with it at the...

Re: Was this myco?

Couldn't really say what it was, but Myco doesn't spread in that way - it is passed from mother to kittens during the birthing process or shortly after - nearly all rats have it, but not all will show symptoms.

I would put your remaining rats on AB's though.

Re: Amazing change on 'straights' diet :D

Flippin heck - I'd need a bank loan to buy all that and a bigger house to store it! LOL I think so long as you have a range of variety and cover the main groupings you can get away with a lot less variants. I think that's just mine (and Jemma's) bent towards experimentation! Amazingly it takes up w...

Re: Blister on foot

It sounds like Bumblefoot which can be very difficult to treat. There are various things you can try - do a search for bumblefoot on the forum and you'll get some more tips! Wire shelving does not cause bumblefoot - in fact nowadays, it's thought that solid shelving is a more likely to be a problem,...

Re: Woohoo just bought me a Jenny cage!

mine don't always get on so the more space the better. The opposite is true to a certain extent. Large cages make rats (particually bucks) more territorial over space. I would probably keep 4 bucks in a Jenny - I don't think it has enough floor space for more. But I've kept 6 does in an equivilent ...
