Re: 3 Smaller Pinkies

Aw, sorry to read this. I'd been keeping my fingers crossed for him. Sorry to hear about how you found him, too :(

Re: nail trimming

that is a useful video. dont watch the 'expert village' ones they will make you see the red mist! Oh no... I couldn't help myself and now am feeling slightly murderous! :( Jules from Acrorats did an amazing job of clipping one of my rats at a show. He is my least handleable boy but she did ...

Re: Six Poorly Rats!

Definitely better to give it by mouth than in water - the vet does sound a bit rubbish. I normally split the daily dose into two. Ooh, just a thought - I know you're not supposed to give Baytril to rats beneath a certain age, but can't remember the number of weeks, so you might want to check that, p...

Re: Six Poorly Rats!

I can see where you're coming from, but I'm sure that it they need longer then the OP will make sure they get more :) A little off topic, but out of interest, does anyone know why it is that rats need longer than 7 days on antibiotics when humans etc. don't? It seems to be a bit of a point of contet...

Re: Six Poorly Rats!

if any are unwell, 7 days isnt going to do anything but cause anti biotic resistance.... So unfortunatly, it seems like the whole thing was a waste of time as your not really any better off then you was at the start, apart from putting your poor girls through un necessery stress which could make th...

Re: Six Poorly Rats!

Just hope your girls aren't pregnant too... When i got them to take the girls off sale they had taken the buck out (realising there mistake) but not taken the girls off sale... :( That doesn't surprise me at all. I'm by no means an expert on ratty pregnancies, but I went in one day and saw a girl w...

Re: Six Poorly Rats!

I don't want to come across as overly offensive here, but can I ask why, after being a member on here for ages and knowing the alternatives, you chose to buy 6 rats from PAH? I really hope they all get the treatment they need and have a lovely life with you, but maybe think about getting your next r...

Re: Does this sound like heart failure?

I've been treating for heart problems in a boy of mine who has similar symptoms and got some really good advice on meds if you want to have a look: http://www.fancy-rats.co.uk/community/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=148507&st=0&sk=t&sd=a The shot of Frusemide seemed to reduce the swollen feeling in his chest ...

Re: Bad news about Timmie.... :-(

Ah, I hadn't seen your previous post. It does look like a tumour, doesn't it :( How is Timmie in himself? Is he reasonably healthy for his age in general? Plenty of rats come through operations just fine at that age as long as the right kind of anaesthetic is used (isoflurane, or another one I can't...

Welll, you can pass on things like ringworm, though probably not from sharing food. I once gave ringworm to my rats - the shame!!

Re: Bad news about Timmie.... :-(

I agree with what others have said about getting a second opinion. How does the vet know for sure that it's an 'agressive tumour'? Also, have you discussed removal options with him? If it's not too attached to the body, perhaps this would be possible :luck: I'd give it a week or so to see if it grow...

Re: Weight loss in old boy - heart prob?

Just an update on Merles as we have a vet appointment tomorrow morning. Good news and bad, really: At first, the medication really made a difference in him. His chest feels less solid and 'barrelled' and he's been brighter and perkier, much more like his old self and keener to free-range again :) He...

Re: My rat suddenly seems really poorly

I was reading about them too. Its awful isn't it. Why do we keep them as pets. So many things can happen to them :( We had a male rat years ago and he only lived to 1 year as well. She wont fall in her cage as I have removed the ramps and put everything on ground level. She isn't climbing and is sn...

Re: Lethargic Rat, having 'fits'.

Congestive heart failure leads to fluid retention and he might well benefit from frusemide (Lasix) and Fortekor - an ACE inhibitor similar to those used in humans. This is almost exactly what I'm trying with a boy of mine at the moment (with a different ACE inhibitor, Enalapril), and I have definit...
