Re: My rat suddenly seems really poorly

The other thing you may want to read about (though hopefully at her age it won't be this) is pituitary tumours, as one of the symptoms of these is the inability to grip properly. Just in case, it may be worth asking the vet for a steroid shot as well as some strong antibiotics.

Re: My rat suddenly seems really poorly

It does sound like it could be an ear infection. Can she grip things properly with her front paws?

If you have a smaller cage it might be worth moving her into it overnight so that she can't fall from a height. Hope things go well for you at the vets' tomorrow.

Re: Baytril+Ronaxan not working-what next for resp infection?

After that combi we tried Ceporex + bisolven but still havent got any results. Its hard, good luck! x I had good results using Ceporex (Cephalexin) with a boy of mine when other drugs weren't having an impact, so I'd say it may be worth a go. Also, if the ratty is refusing to take a full dose in fo...

Re: Weight loss in old boy - heart prob?

Yay! The vet gave him a shot of Frusemide and I have some Enalapril 2.5mg tablets that I've been told to give 1/6 of twice daily :) Fingers crossed that it'll work for him. At least I feel like I'm doing something now...

Re: Weight loss in old boy - heart prob?

Thanks :) I'm not sure if I have the number or not - would you mind sending it to me again please (and the vet's name)? Hopefully I'll be able to get *something* tomorrow... I feel guilty that I haven't been back and pushed sooner :(

Re: Weight loss in old boy - heart prob?

Thanks Vic. Lol, he has 3 nice brown teeth and one which is whiter, as he very obligingly demonstrates in a pic from a couple of weeks ago: http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o152/velvet_nothing/Merlot-Raffy-Marmalade/DSCN1505.jpg I'll try to get a video of him tomorrow (though I can't remember how ...

Re: Weight loss in old boy - heart prob?

:( I've just weighed Merlot and he's lost almost another 30g in the last 2 weeks - I cried my eyes out when I put him on the scales and saw the number. He's seemed a little brighter since the antibiotics and is eating, drinking, climbing, reasonably perky etc., so I didn't expect another dramatic lo...

Re: Marbocyl administration??

I have no idea about the powder/water/shaking part, but the liquid Marbocyl I was given for a boy of mine last week was an injectable type too, to be given orally. If you're not certain, it's probably best to phone the vet and check, just in case.

Re: Possible PT or ear infection suggestions

Aw, that doesn't sound so good :( Have you tried any steroid shots yet? If it's a PT, apparently the thing to try is a shot of dexamethasone followed by a course of dex tablets to grind up and give at home (I've been told a quick-effect shot followed by a course is better than a longer lasting shot,...

Re: Video of Bruce limping - What's wrong?

Hey there! From the video, I'm certain it's not HLD. It looks like he's sprained his foot, possibly from a fall or something. A couple of my boys have managed to do that to themselves and returned to normal within a couple of days, but they do sometimes get swollen (to about twice/3/4 times the size...

Re: Small Lump

My boy Parsnip had a fatty lump under his armpit of about the same size, but fortunately it stayed a similar size and just grew very, very slowly for the rest of his life (about a year after it appeared!). His was some kind of fatty mass; is the girl's squeezable at all, or is it hard? Sadly I think...

Re: Weight loss in old boy - heart prob?

Merlot seems slightly perkier today. Not back to his normal self, but not as bad as he was last night. After his little 'panic episode', he didn't move from his Huujcube pretty much all night and I was starting to really worry for him, but hopefully the ABs may be starting to work? *sigh* I only rea...

Re: Weight loss in old boy - heart prob?

That sounds worth trying :) I'll maybe try to make an appointment for Friday, after I've had a chance to see if the ABs do anything. I do need to learn how to phrase it the right way. I got their backs up last summer when a boy of mine (Merlot's brother, in fact, :halo: ) had a probable PT and I kep...

Re: Weight loss in old boy - heart prob?

Thanks for the advice :) I asked about trying Fortekor when I was in last time, but was told that it's not possible to split the tablets small enough for rats, and that he didn't necessarily show signs of heart disease in any case :( She basically told me that many probs in rats are hard to treat, a...

Re: Weight loss in old boy - heart prob?

:( An update to say that I'm quite worried about Merlot tonight. I let them out to free-range about 2 hours ago and he seemed to have some kind of panic attack: he ran around briefly in a panicked fashion and seemed to lose bowel contol (lots of poos, which he only ever does out of the cage when fri...
