Very Sad Decision To Make :-(

Post by purple_fluffy_panther » Sat Jul 16, 2011 8:45 pm

I think I might have to get rid of my rats :-(. I've been thinking about it and weighing up the pro's and cons, but I just cant make up my mind fully.

On the one hand I love them to bits and they're fed and cleaned and loved etc, on the other hand they dont get to free range as much as they should because we have cats, so they can only come out when the cats are out. I kick the cats into another room or outside when I get the rats out, but its not fair on the cats either to keep being banished so the rats can come out.

The rats seem happy enough, they play together and sleep and do all the usual ratty things.. sometimes when we open the cage they dont even want to come out, other times they do. So I think they're happy... Part of me thinks they would be happier if they went to someone who could interact more with them.

Could anyone give me some advice?? To try and, I dont know, help me make the decision. My fiancee isnt much help as he's biased as he doesnt like the rats much anyway. I started thinking more about it when Bryses died and I realised how little i'd bonded with her compared to my old rats I had.

When I had Melody, Cleo and Snowdrop they were always out and I was forever buying them toys and things to entertain them, but with these ones It feels different, I just havent bonded with them like I did the others. I still give them things to entertain them, boxes of tissues and anything else I come across that I think they'd like. But it's different somehow...

Sorry for ranting but im really conflicted about what I should do. I cant bear the thought of getting rid of them, but at the same time I cant help wonder if it would be better for them :S

Im afraid I dont see the problem! If the rats can come out once a day for free-range surely that's fine? It's what most people on this forum do. Sorry if im being thick and have mis-read it

That to me still isn't world-ending :D Assuming their cage is enriching I cant see why you would rehome them, how long do they come out for when they do?

And why do you feel it unfair to kick the cats out? I think a fair few people on here have multi-animal households and have to do the same. The cat'll forgive you

i mainly free-range in my bedroom as thats where the cages are kept my cat isnt allowed in anyways so thats not a problem. sometimes i'l bring them down to the living room so i can watch t.v so the cat gets shut out, most of the time he just goes and lies somewhere else, sometimes he moans for 5 mins but tough! in fact, the cat has been shut out the living room most of today as i've been doing intro's. i dont see the problem of the cats been locked out of one room for an hour or two, they have the rest of the house :)

They've got plenty of toys and things in their cage, it's just they're not very well socialised with people because they don't come out as often as they should. Sometimes its only once a week if we're busy.

I feel bad kicking the cats out because .. well im not sure, i just do lol. I just think someone else could give them more than I can I suppose.

I'm sure they are happy with you - we can't all free-range them as much as we want, but we do our best.

Yeah true. . . i think ive listened to my fiancee too much.. he's not a rat lover so he doesnt get a vote lol. He moans because he cleans them out as I cant with my back being bad.

He only moans because they insist on 'helping' him clean the cage by grabbing the cloth and getting pulled along by it hehe

The way I see it is this...when rats go somewhere new they are put through stress, made to learn new routines and people. Somethings may not be perfect in the life they already have but if they are loved, happy and cared for, well really how do I know that someone else would love them as much and take care of them and they would be happier? No one walks in your shoes so it is hard for anyone to tell you what to do. I can only say that for me I feel that it would be far harder on them to have to be uprooted then to deal with less than perfect free range.

Yeah, I think you might be right on that one. I think id have a hard job finding someone local to take on 5 rats anyway, and id never split them up.

They're always playing and stuff with each other, and when we go near the cage they come to investigate, so i might keep them and just try to work in some more free range time.

don't feel too bad. they got a good life with you. no one perfect. i know like for me this week i have been redecorating my sitting room all week, so my girls have not been coming out  . feel really bad for that (i think they would look funny with yellow and blue paint spots on them  ). even if they get 20mins a day, that better than some owners treat there rat.
enjoy your girls, if you give them up, all that would go though you head was 'what if'.

All my ratties like to help with cleaning too - they like to climb in fresh hammocks before they're even hung properly to show you how it works.

Ours are currently not freeranged as much as i'd like (because we're packing to move and it's just not safe to have them free roaming with piles of things at the moment), but if they're getting enough attention - i get mine out for extra snuggle time while we do this - then there isn't an issue. Your rats would soon let you know if theyw ere unhappy. :)

Just for the record my friends other half is not keen on ratties but she still keeps them and is trying to convert him.

My rats get lots of interaction with me even if I don't get them out of the cage properly. I stand in front of the explorer with the top door open and they are in and out all over me. I don't count this as free range, but it's still not being shut up. There are only 6 in an explorer with no middle, so they have a lot of in cage space too.
In the summer they are not getting as much free range opportunity as I would like because I am so busy with the guest house and going to bed a bit earlier than normal, so they don't get to come out for a romp on the bed (or a hide behind my pillow) every night. I have cats and the cat flap is in the lounge, so it's not practical to shut them out in the evening when I am collapsed in front of the tv.
But I wouldn't consider getting rid of them because I think that they still have a very good life here with me. Nobody's life is perfect - if it was I'd have rats riding around on my shoulders all day (and they'd come back any time I called) but that wouldn't be good for business. :)
To keep your fiance happier, could you take the rats off for free range whilst he's cleaning the cage, then he'd get it done in peace and you could have quality rat time? :luck:

There's other ways to interact with your rats than free range time that my lot at least seem to value more, a quick 5 minutes riding in my shoulder round the house one at a time whilst I do chores, chasing tissues accross the bars of the cage which they then get to drag in, and a few minutes being stroked with a cage door open. I tend to get ignored by most of my rats at free range and they sulk if they dont get this extra attention.
I also agree with everyone else about uprooting them, personally if a rat is happy, then they are better staying in a home they know with people who know them. I have 2 of my 10 rats who would be happy with 5 minutes free range a day, and 5 who wouldn't be happy with 10 hours a day but collapse in bed after chasing a tissue.

My hubby resents the rats at the moment because he has to clean the cages too but it sounds like a great idea to take them off to say the bathroom and free range them there whilst he cleans and it would make it easier for them. And dont worry about the cats they only want to be in the room you shut them out of because they aren't allowed in it for a while, they'll sulk and they'll get over it.
