Im a grandmother

Post by StephF » Wed Aug 03, 2011 9:02 am

Got 4 young bucks on a rescue from Pets @ Home, yesterday whilst looking at the rats climbing in their cages I was thinking "Thats odd, He has nipples on his belly!"

Turns out 2 of the bucks were in fact Does !! :angryrat:

I wake up this morning and there are little squeaks from the back of the cage !! :baby:

Aargghh !!

P@H have agreed to care for & rehouse the mum & cubs.

I have no room to look after them myself as I have loads of bucks.

Sigh, I just wish they had paid more attention to sexing them !

Sadly that is quite common with PAH. I would urge you though, please dont give them the mums and babies back :( . Tell them you want to raise them yourself (them paying for the stuff you need), and rehome them straight to loving pet homes yourself.

Where are you based? I'm sure someone on this forum would be willing to foster the mums for you. Please don't give them back to the shop, it just means they make more money from that error and probably make the same mistake again. Demand supplies off them to help raise the kittens. Also, I don't mean to scare you, but if the girls were still in with the bucks after giving birth, they may well be pregnant again. I would foster if I was close to you, but I don't think I am. Good look, Nana.

I have to echo not giving the babies back, more than likely there is someone near you with spare cages and help.
You'll need to make sure the babies can't get out of wired cages, or can't fall from heights.
If the boys where still in the cage of time of the birth you will need to be prepared that mums are pregnant again, as they will go into heat as soon as they has given birth, so you will need to tell the person you are rehoming them.

Hi all,

I didn't realise people felt that way about P@H.

They've always seemed to be quite conscientious to me.

Unfortunately, its now evening and I didnt get to read any of these posts before returning the does and babies.

Judging from the average gestation period for rats she must have been already pregnant when I got her.

I made sure I warned the store that the other doe was mostly pregnant too.

I will make extra sure next time to double check the ratties "bits" next time :P

Next time I would get rats from an ethical breeder or rescue, then you will not have that problem again

Please also warn them that the doe who gave birth is probably already pregnant again too, so there may be another litter in about 3 1/2 weeks (or a little later if she delays the implantation).

The mother will also be removed from her babies and put in the adoption tank whent his is all over and therefore will be sold alone and will probably live alone, sadly. A similar thing happened to a Degu my mum adopted from their adoption centre.
