Ok, hands up - who will admit they've got too many ??

For anything to do with rat care that doesn't fit into any of the sections above!

Who thinks maybe they have too many rats?

Ok I admit it!

Ok, hands up - who will admit they've got too many ??

Post by Metermaid » Thu Nov 10, 2005 8:16 pm

Just wondering - I now have 9 boys...and in my heart of hearts I know I probably shouldn't have added the last 2 babies - don't get me wrong, all is well, no fighting etc....but well, I think I would probably say that for me 6 would be a good number. So just wondering how many of us out there have more ratties than we feel we ideally should have (it's so hard resisting the GMR !!)

Although we cope fine with the 10 that we have - we can afford all the bills and give them all enough attention - I do feel that they would stress me out less there were fewer of them.
Saying that though, I can't image life without any of them! :D We love each and every one of them....I suppose I'm just a bit of a worrier really, I'd probably worry even if we had just two! :P

i havent voted yet lol

when i had 8 i thought that was about my limit, i also have/had other animals (hammies, gerbils, g.pigs) plus the occasional rescues.

when my 8 got down to 4 (due to passings) i thought i would keep the origional and start again when i had none.

i now have 9, in 2 cages rather than one, plus the 5 gerbils in 2 cages.

i did at one point feel i had too many animals, which is why my g.pigs went to live with my parents, my mum spoils them rotton. they werent being neglected i just felt guilty about not being able to give them the amount of time.

i feel im ok now, its hard sometimes when i have extra rescues in, but having their own room helps as they get more out time as the old boys are free range most of the day.

ok, id say im down to manageable, but i was at one point started to struggle!

I know full well I have too many. I can cope, yes, but it's not good for me or the animals right now - in our student life, we have too many - I think when we are working we will have the time for all of them without trouble, but at the moment it's a struggle. :) I'm not afraid to admit that, though. We have far less now than we did before, and I'm not increasing my numbers.

I only have 2 (soon to be 4) rats and would possibily have a few more. I also have 2 rabbits, 2 snails, a dog and 4 hens, though I shall soon have up to 12 chicks (depending on hatch rate) so maybe not for a while

I have always wanted a totally black rat and I'd like to have some babies if I knew I could home them all well
(^. .^)~ 4 ratties, 2 rabbits, 8 chickens, 4 giant snails and a dog (^. .^)

I've only got 11 now - I say only as I was up to 30 at one point!
While I love the rats I've got now, I won't be getting anymore unless I get offered one in a 'life or death' situation, and would probably still only foster it unless for some reason I really needed to keep it (e.g. I needed to split my rats for some reason and needed to keep the new one as company for a lone rat)
I don't know whether I could go without any rats, but I do have several other animals which live a lot longer (rabbits and chinchillas), so would probably just stick to these, or perhaps just a pair of rats.
All my of current rats have been from homes where they've not recieved much socialisation as babies so none are really clingy and dependant on me - my boys don't even like being handled (one hates being stroked and shies away from people, even after intense socialisation - he improved a little but still nipped and bolted if you moved your hand an inch, and one is completely vicious and only gets handled when necessary as he gets very stressed out by it), and my girls are in a group of 9 so have plenty of ratty company and do seem to prefer each other to me!
But in the future I would like to have just a pair or trio and have some cuddly snuggly rats again like I've had in the past!

I think the 'problem' is that they are small animals, it is easy to fit several in a cage perfectly suitable for the number of rats without taking up too much space, plus they are very sociable and usually do well in groups. You can quite easily have only one or two decent size cages in a room yet have 10+ rats (especially with aviaries, holding many rats yet look appealing and not take up masses of space). And with so many rats needing new homes it's hard to resist 'just one more', and before you realise it you have a whole hoard that you're struggling to cope with, yet don't want to rehome as you know there's many more needing homes more desperately, and it was your decision to take them on. I know that perhaps my animals may be better looked after in a home that had fewer other pets, and got more one-on-one time, but I also know there are worst homes they could've gone to, and some would not even be alive if I hadn't agreed to take them. At least mine have suitable and clean cages, the best food recommended, fresh water, veg, company (where appropriate) and vet care whenever needed. They may not get as much human contact as others, and while I agree that rats are intelligent and do often thrive from human bonds, I think mine are happy enough with the attention they do get, and as I've mentioned, some prefer to be left to themselves (I also have a Roborovski hamster, which is nearly impossible to handle being so small and quick, and a gerbil which hates being touched, so is left to her own devices)

I only have 2 (will be 3 tomorrow YAY ). My main cage is big enough for 3, and we will not be upgrading the cage. Therefore we will not be getting more.

Despite all the jokes about my sig (especially when I then told Janvier I'd take one of her rescue and rehoming boys on ) we're really not getting any more. I'm disabled, have a 3-year-old son, a boyfriend and a cat (and a house to keep somewhat clean) and a job to do. 3 sounds like a perfect number to me, for me.

Wouldn't tell anyone else their number wasn't right for them unless they had just one, or couldn't cope with the amount they had, though.
Samurai (Sam) - Silver fawn.
Pirate (Pie) - Silver fawn hoodie.
Sylvester - Black berk mismark.

I'm not getting any more, I'm not getting any more, I'm not getting any more. ... This time I mean it!

I put no, I have 4 at the moment. I have Jemima, Eva and King George in the big cage, and I have PE on his own and with me most the time as he can't share cage with other rats because he is different.

I find that number fine. 4 in the big cage would be ok. I don't find it hard to resist GMR - I find that when you have a number you are comfortable with then it's easy to stick to it, not getting more rats isn't a sacrifice to me, it isn't a struggle. I just prefer smaller groups, more time per rat and all. :)

Yes, I currently have more than my ideal number.

But in my defence the last few additions have been very unplanned:
Faith was in danger of being put to sleep.
Archie and Lem were given up by a "friend" who decided they were too much for her and I couldn't bear to see them rehomed elsewhere.
Errol came via my vet as he was taken to be put to sleep for killing their hamster.

I'd like to have less than 10, preferably all in one group. But, short term, I'd like to have them living in two groups, rather than the four groups I've got now - that would make out time much easier.
