Can someone recommend me a cage?

Post by Amzy » Thu Jan 07, 2010 5:21 pm

Hey hey

I'm looking for a new cage... but unsure on what to get for the amount of rats I have/going to have..

I currently have a critter and two small ones cable tied together (see pic below)

http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak ... 4194_n.jpg

3 girls live in the critter and 2 girls live in the other. The 2 girls are squishy and cuddly so spend most their time in my room asleep somewhere...

I have reserved a rescue at the local rescue centre which will be living with me and I know someone who wants to place 4 more with myself!

I want a cage where I can fit a fair few in and can possibly have space for a couple more if i see a rescue whom I would like etc..

I am willing to spend around £150 on a cage... and want the best/biggest I could get

Anyone advise me?!

Id recommend for your budget, either a furet tower or explorer, both cages are excellent and very big (holding anywhere between 12/18 rats, depending on the persons opinion of how much space they should have) although as far as I remember the furet tower is a bit bigger. If you didnt want something quite so big, you could go for the furet xl, (the furet tower, is 2 furet xls put together) once again, it depends fully on the persons opinion of how much space is suitable, but it can hold probably about 8 girls. I currently keep 5 boys in mine (soon to be 6) and if pushed, could probably stretch that to 7 boys if I really had to. The best thing about the explorer is the fully opening doors which I think is something most poeple prefer, but these are the 3 cages I would recommend for your budget and the size you want :)

Can you split the furet tower into two? Thats the cage I deep down want I think... And its probably better getting the tower over two XL's 'cos thats better value for money I think and knowing my track record of getting ratties its probably easier...

One of my Dumbo girls is very very fragile and delicate and as much as she likes socialising she gets annoyed at the others and goes off on her own... like now its freerange time for both groups and shes hiding in my hood  So being able to split it into two might be pretty useful... both groups of mine get on but have to be split because of miss princess I dont want to be social ratty

I dont think I would like the big doors on the explorer

Hmmmm wheres the best place to get a furet tower

Yep, the furet tower can be split into 2, theres a hole from one base to the next cage, so you would have to cover it, which should be too hard if you just put a litter tray over it or covered it with some plastic. You could even buy a new tray without the hole in the base if you wanted. Equinecaninefeline would probably have a good price for it although if youre anywhere near Newcastle then Ill be selling mine soon. You could check the market place on here also, and ebay. :)

We got a Liberta Explorer at Xmas (approx £140). This cage is huge, and seems much more solid than the other cages we've had in the past. The whole front opens up (4 seperate doors). The upper and lower levels can be partitioned off.

The only downside is that the trays in the upper and lower sections have a very small lip - our boys manage to throw a lot of their cage lining (Bed Xcel) on to the floor.

If you need something to cover the hole between the levels B&Q have an external wall vent that fits perfectly over the top!

Whereabouts do you mean?

Had 6 girls in it for past 2 hours and all seems well... Trixi is a little so and so and can open cage doors... shes trying her hardest here but is failing!
