Finacard in the Leicester area?

Post by kerenza » Sat Jan 16, 2010 3:49 pm

The finacard website isn't running at the moment and I'm very low on substrate. I'd been using ecopet bed but want to go back to finacard, does anyone know of a seller within a 25 mile radius of Leicester? Thanks :)

I dont know about finacard but Natural World in Syston sells big bags of shredded cardboard (called bed excel) if you need. I think a large bag (does about 4-5 changes in a freddy) is about £7.

Slightly off topic but which vet do you use in Leicester and are they any good?

Thanks guys, I have ordered a bale and should be with me next week :D
I use Fairfield in Hinckley, they have a vet there who specialises in small animals and she is great. They're almost on our doorstep but I would recommend them to anyone who is within travelling distance.

I often get mine from rattycorner on FRs, who buys it in bulk as she breeds rats and has plenty to cater for  She lives in Rugby.

Up until I moved (about 6 months ago) I used Bell Brown & Bentley on the hinkley road, who were always very good & willing to wok with us to find the right treatment. Chine house in Sileby though is the main exotics specialist for the area, so if you're close that would be a great main vet to use.

I use Borajos in Birstall. Im not sure about Chine House, yes the chap there is an exotics expert, but Ive never felt "right" about him. I took 2 bucks in with breathing problems (I was convinced it wasnt SDAv) but asked him to check and he said it could be probably, he sees it all the time. I said there has been a couple of outbreaks this last 12 months, he said no, its around all the time, most rats will get it.

The lady at Borrajos (Teresa or Tessa) seemed to follow the same train of thought as the NFRS on SDAv when I took another buck, she said it wasnt SDAv and if it was I would have more than one rat with a sniffle.

Its a personal choice really as to how you feel.

Hi
I buy bedexcel recycled cardboard bedding from Natural world in Syston. its pretty much like fincacard. They sell big bags for about £5 and also often have bales too.

I take my ratties to Chine House in Sileby. Craig hunt is their exotics specialist and i've always found him to be very good. The other vets there aren't so good with small furries though, so i always ask for him and only see another vet if it is an emergency.

I use Craig at chine house will not use anyone else now iv finally found someone like him. He has dealt with over 150 of my rats, all my bunnies and my dog too and then my mums pets and my brother beardie too. He is a very knowlageable vet and he has to try to be very simple at explaining things as he gets himself carried away explaining as he is so passionate about his job.

I would never use barajos as they don't use a very human method of euthanasia, it has took 2 rats 2 hours and 21/2 hours for them to finally ''go'' and also had many people come out with pointless medications that arn't necerssary for that problem. Iv also heard a vet tell a bunny owner to feed the rabbit lettuce and beetroot as it had bloat!!!! now that is just common sense if you ask me! I could go on and on about the bad experiences i have heard from many people but i be good :P

Natural world in syston sell Bedexcel small bags 4kg for £4.99 and 20kg bales for £10.99, i work there myself so this is where i hear many people vet experinces if you wondered :)

Thanks. Not keen on Chine House, we had horses with them and they were useless (apart from John Coop), one of them even complained that she was called out at 7am (as she was the emergency on-call) to put one of them down and her behaviour was pretty awful :(

I use the Park Group and they are ok (very good bedside manner), but I dont think confident with rats (certainly not the practice I use). Looking to maybe using Leggett in Anstey as it is close to Ratby and the lady there is supposed to be good with small animals. Borrajo's was my other choice but they were a little further away.

Funny how we all have different experiences. Ive never had a rat take more than 10 mins to the PTS at Borrajos. How do Chine House PTS rats? It was Craig I saw, and I just dont get that good feeling about him. Im sure he is a great vet, and he did come up with the idea of putting a rat in a carrier next to a bowl of Olbas Oil in hot water and covering them up when they have breathing problems which works. I think it comes down to personal choice. Find a vet you like and feel confident with and you cant go far wrong.

Craig is the only vet i see, unless its to just have a aniaml PTS. They gas them first then wait until they are asleep, then they inject into the heart so its literally seconds. Iv had far too many different experiences with vets and after having had tortoise training from craig and hearing how passionate and enthusiastic he is about promoting the health of animals. he's operated on about 30 of my rats and even examines their liver etc and reccomends i try feeding certain heral drugs to keep them in top condition for the future. I have also helped educate him on exact amounts of protein to feed rats with liver failure etc and steaming the room etc for rats with gasping res problems so we work well together :)

I cant say iv had experience with the equine side of things but they are a totally different side.
