Rat pulling up cover during freerange..

Post by Werepuppy » Sun Jul 17, 2011 6:47 pm

For freerange, I have a correx pen and i line the floor with a sheet to make sure the carpet doesn't get covered in pee and poops, but some of my rats (Tasmania in particular) spend most their time tugging the sheets at the corners of the pen and if they succeed in getting an edge, burrowing under the sheet which is quite annoying when I would like them to freerange for a longer period but it ends up being cut short because Tas won't stop trying to dig her way out!

I make sure there's plenty to do and keep adding new features to the freerange time, and the catfood mansion I'm building has become quite magnificent.. but she still does it and it gets really annoying when I'm trying to relax during their freerange time. :angryrat:

One alternative is to not use a sheet at all, but I'm worried about my carpet stinking of pee after so many freeranges :sickrat:
What do other people do?

Why don't you get them like a towel or a blanket an scrunch it up so they can hide/burrow in there, instead of the sheet? My ratties love to have something to burrow into :D

Knowing Tas as I do, you're not gonna stop her doing that without stapling the blanket to the floor  One possible solution would be to make the playpen a bit smaller, so that there's far more work to be done to actually get under the blanket - but as others have said, maybe providing an alternative distraction is the better option. Maybe put a blanket on the blanket, for her to dig under? Otherwise, a scrunched-up pile, or rags in a pillowcase or whatever~

OK trying the blanket idea, i've trapped the edge under the pen where they keep digging excessively. Will see how that goes.

Oooh, I just re-read what I put, and realised I worded it awfully.
What I meant was still having the sheet at the bottom, but with a blanket to hide in too? I have no idea if this will stop her digging up the sheet, but it's a distraction?

I don't think she's going to stop, methinks she's just trying to dig her way out.
My thoughts are to perhaps get a slightly more sturdy mat, something that can still be chucked in the wash but stiff enough that it cant be pulled up.

try a cheap mat (probably won't fit in machine to clean) but you could try flotex floor tiles, they are about 18 by 18 inches and you can buy them individually or even a few planks of laminate flooring that can slot together then be stored flat somewhere. I use flotex in the top level of my explorer and it scrubs up so easily, also great to use on shelves of the critter cages etc. Never been chewed and too heavy to lift by ratties

I use a roll of lino. Really easy to wipe clean and store away rolled up. I got an off cut free from my local :) shop.

Why not put Correx on the floor? If the edges of the Correx floor go underneath the sides of the playpen they shouldn't be able to pull them up. You could put the sheet on top of the Correx then Tas' can still pull the sheet up lol. :P

Or as suggested - a lino' offcut might be a good idea otherwise.

I have to have a litter tray out in my free range area  but I recommend lino too, I use it in my cages and even in constant use it lasts about 5 months, so would last longer in a pen

I often use one of those thick plastic-y tablecloths too - works quite well and wipes clean!
