Recent announcements including changes to the Forum Rules

Statement on Introducing mixed species

Fancy Rats Admin would like to remind our members, that on the subject of introducing prey/predator species, our Ethics state:

All rats should be protected from fear and distress. They should be kept safe from other pets who are natural predators.

We believe that, even in controlled circumstances, introducing different species often carries a substantial risk to the animals involved.

We believe that it is rarely to the prey animal's benefit and even when successfully achieved, animals have been known to quickly "turn" months or years later. It is not uncommmon for people to misunderstand the behavioural cues and signals of their animals.

Mixing species may sound fun or cute but it is not something to be approached on a whim or for the novelty factor, even cat to dog mixing must be approached with care. While habituating animal species to each other's smells and sounds is a sensible goal, physically introducing them is not recommended by Fancy Rats.

Fancy Rats Team

Re: Recent additions to the forum rules

Post by Fancy Rats Admin » Thu Apr 02, 2009 3:52 pm

We would like to let our members know that we have amended and clarified the rules within Community Chat here.

We previously announced that this sub-forum was now formally moderated, and the rules have been amended to reflect this fully.

Thank you.

Statement on Swearing

Post by Fancy Rats Admin » Wed May 06, 2009 4:01 pm

Statement on swearing

Following an upsurge in instances of swearing, we would like to take the opportunity to clarify a few points on the use of profanity on Fancy Rats.

You may have noticed the words *please do not swear* appear in another members post from time to time. This is the phrase the automatic word censor function of the forum replaces a swear word with.

The actual swear word will be edited from the post as soon as a moderator sees it.

For the past 5+ years Fancy Rats has not allowed swearing on the forum. This includes all forms of swearing, be it swearing removed by the word censor, or asterisking out all or part of the word, or deliberately misspelling a word. This rule has not changed, swearing is still a breach of forum rules and will result in moderation. That is not to say you would ever be warned or banned immediately for swearing, but you will initially be asked not to swear. Repeatedly ignoring requests from moderators to refrain from swearing may eventually result in a warning and if this is still ignored then a temporary ban would be issued. This has never happened in the history of the forum, but we have rules for the good of the whole forum and are not able to positively discriminate about and overlook repeated rule breaks, whatever rule is involved.

If you do type a word that you don't really consider swearing and the filter picks it up you are able to edit it out of your post yourself for the 5 minutes following posting. Please moderate yourself and remove any chance of being moderated. If you type a word that you don't really consider swearing and the filter picks it up, but you genuinely miss the 5 minute edit slot, please PM FRA immediately and we will edit the post for you without taking further action.

The filter is not fully comprehensive, if you post a swear word that is not picked up, or post an otherwise acceptable word that becomes a swearword in the context used, it will still be subject to moderation for swearing.

Please note that this rule affects all areas of the forum, including Community Chat.

Please Read

Post by Fancy Rats Admin » Fri Feb 05, 2010 3:24 pm

Further to a number of threads which appeared on FR some time ago posted by member hairlessluvver, the Humberside police have asked people to contact their local police station if they sent anything to Caroline Klein at her request. Tell your local police station that PC Gary Moxon at Humberside poice is dealing with it and then they will collate the information.

Please do not discuss this on the forum, for obvious legal reasons.

Updated Forum Rules, and changes to business advertising

Post by Fancy Rats Admin » Fri Feb 26, 2010 3:42 pm

The Fancy Rats Admin team would like to draw your attention to the latest complete version of the forum rules. These are now accessible via the icon at the top of each page of the forum. We have incorporated all the recent rule changes and additions into this version, so please take the time to read through them to ensure you are fully aware.

We have also made some clarifications and changes regarding businesses advertising within the Market Place (MP) and the Web Directory (WD).

The MP is primarily for classified rat related adverts from members to allow them to sell on rat related products that they no longer require, it is not intended as free advertising space for businesses. A business is defined as someone producing items specifically for sale.
All new businesses may post in the MP on launch and the thread may remain for a maximum of 1 month, following this, businesses may only post periodically to advise members of significant sales/offers or the launch of a genuinely new product line. This does not include things like changes in colours of hammock material, minor adjustments/additions to recipes, or a business adding a stock product that is widely available elsewhere.
Businesses are limited to one advert at any given time. If a second thread is submitted, the first will be removed or merged at the discretion of the moderators.
All adverts should follow the format of classified advertising, i.e. posts should be limited to 'one-off' topics.
All posts in the MP and the WD are subject to approval by FRA.
Businesses may have a thread within the WD, headed by an explanatory post. If any significant changes are needed to this post, the business owner should contact FRA to request an edit.
Members may submit reviews of products or shops to the WD by replying to the appropriate thread.
Discussion threads relating to businesses may appear elsewhere on the board, but any overt advertising will be removed.

Fancy Rats Team

Use of the Report Function

Post by Fancy Rats Admin » Tue Mar 23, 2010 9:04 am

We would like to bring the 'report post' function to the attention of members. This is the exclamation mark in a triangle found on each post.

Its purpose is to flag a post or thread for the attention of a moderator or admin aide, and is already being used to great effect by some members. Please note though that its use should not be restricted to rule breaks, it is perfectly appropriate to use it to request a thread be moved, locked (if in a forum area such as ratsitting where locking is normal), or edited (in special circumstances such as a change of show details).

Due to the recent slowness of the forum there has been a rise in duplicate posts, and so rather than deleting the post content (which is against forum rules), please use the report function instead to highlight the duplicate. Adding a note to a duplicate thread to ask people not to reply to that copy is acceptable, but deletion is not.

Thank you for your assistance with this.

Fancy Rats Team

Reminder regarding discussion of rats in shops/rescues

Post by Fancy Rats Admin » Tue Jun 01, 2010 2:00 pm

There have been a number of posts recently regarding rats which are looking for homes, in which members have expressed regret that they couldn't help them, or their indecision over whether to. The amount of detail supplied has been enough to identify where these rats can be found, often in the adoption section of a branch of PAH, but sometimes in some other rescue centre.

We would like to remind members that discussing these specific cases can effectively act as an advertisement for them, which is against forum rules unless the rat is already on our rehoming board. If advice is sought over a genuine consideration of whether to adopt the rat, we ask that all details of where the rat is should be kept out of the post.

Thank you for your cooperation on this matter.
Regards,
Fancy Rats Team
