One forum I go on has a regular membership pruning, the rule is very simple, you must post once within about 30 days after signing up and then you will not be pruned. This ensures serious members, even those who just want to lurk, at least say hello.

This isn't going to happen with Fancy Rats, simply because the aim of the forum is to provide help to the maximum number of rat owners as and when they need it, not about restricting it to members who are serious about joining in, it's not that sort of forum.

A member may take a few years break from rats and then get more, or someone may be happy to lurk and get information that way but would never wish to post, or whatever, and that's absolutely fine with us - posting has never been and never will be compulsory.

im excited now! i have been part of the forum since 2006 i think and im never away from here even if i dont post every day.

my only suggestion would be if we could have a small chat box or similar i see them on other forums i go on and they can be very handy for those needing quick help with something i used to use Matt and lucy's when it was linked to on the forum and then it was taken over by toyah i know lots of people spent a lot of time there. ( i lost all the details to it when my last computer went caput!)
i know there would a fair few of us which are around a lot during the day/evenings to help mod it if needed, myself included since im a stay at home mum and my days go between toys feeding and the computer  )

I'm not such a fan of chat boxes. The main idea of a forum is to have discussions that are then saved to a form of knowledge bank, chat boxes don't allow this. If you need information in an emergency I think you'be be better off phoning a vet etc... I think people should always be able to search previous discussions and gain information from them. Also, if ever there was a sense of "cliques" I think a chat box may add to this.

Just my 2 pennies anyway....

not all issues require a vet though..
one forum i am on the chat part is part of the "general chat" forum. and it has a few rules similar to the rest of the forum, they have quizes once a week and actually brings the members on the forum closer and creates a better community aswell as being a source of help.
as for the "cliques" iv been on the forum a fair while and there's nearly always some sort of cliques but then so is life, we cant all like each other it just stands out more in forums like this because mostly we only have one thing in common.. rats the rest of our lives are vastly different but it really shouldn't stop people posting if it doesn't stop them posting on the normal forum.

Rhona-same. I'm on another forum who have daily evening quizzes and there are threads about favourite youtube vids/books/tv/films etc as well. It does bring the community together.

However, I love FR the way it is. :hearts:

I know, that's why I put "etc" lol

It's just my view. People resort to asking question in the chat section, they get answers but then there's nothing saved for anyone to refer to at a later date..... It would contribute to the same questions getting asked time and time again.

I've asked before why accounts which have never posted - for years - aren't deleted, and as far as I can remember the reply was that it was felt to be important that anyone who might need ratty help had to be able to access the forum. Which didn't really make sense to me, as most of the forums are readable by non-members and they can also use the Search feature. I think it's really important that anyone can read the forums that give advice on rat care. I also think it's important on any forum to have at least some areas that are readable for everyone. I spend a lot of time lurking anywhere before I join, to get the ethos of the place. You can't do that if all the forums are unavailable.

I did have another thought - seeing that our newest forum member's name is just a collection of random letters. Is it possible to have restrictions on the kind of forum name you have, thereby reducing the bots? I know nothing about these things, so it may not be possible, or helpful.

Unfortunately those random collection of letters probably mean something in another language as most of the pill pushing/porn people seem to come from the far east as far as I can see and there have been a lot from Russia lately too. It makes me so :sickrat: and :angryrat: I am also dubious of those that don't include "rats" in their interests :-? if they bother to fill that bit in at all.

Yes, the care boards are public, and will remain so, but I don't think visitors can use the search function - that may be something we can change for the new forum.

I don't understand why it seems to be important to you that the membership should get pruned? (The bots are a recent problem, and we need to tackle them in a different way.)
