Lump on Face Already!

Post by Lackis » Tue Dec 08, 2009 1:36 pm

I got my rats last Saturday (5th) and on Sunday night thought I could see a lump on Abigail's face. I got them out yesterday and there's definitley a little lump beneath her right eye towards her snout. I took her straight to the vets round the corer - the vets I registered my last 2 with were a small animal specialists - this was just a general one. The vet had a look at her and felt the lump, it doesn't seem to be causing Abigail any pain and is aparently hard to the touch. She's eating and drinking fine but that's really all I can say so far! To be honest the vet had limited experience with rats and gave me some antibiotics to put in the water for 5 days incase it's an abcess (as I suspect?) and basically said take them back if this has happened after only 24 hours of getting them.

Well I kind of feel that she's not a faulty toaster :-? to be taken back to the shop. If there is something very wrong I'd rather treat her and look after her here even if it is only for a very short time, instead of her being carted from one place to another to be poked about by vets and kept in a little tank.

Does anyone have any suggestions what might be wrong? Is there any chance she's just banged her face? The swelling's been there for 3 days now but hasn't got any bigger and doesn't seem to be painful. Is it most likey to be an abcess and will antibiotcs get rid of it? The only thing the vet said that made me feel better is that Abigail only beng 11wks old seems very unlikely for it to be a tumor or tooth problem, more likely in an older rat etc. Basically if it's still there when I finish the antibiotics (assuming she takes them!) I'll get back in with my specialist vet. And borrow some money off someone!

If anyone can offer me any advice (or even encouragement!) I'd really really apreciate it :( I'm a bit worried that if she's having health problems alreay that doesn't bode well for the rest of her life.

i would suggest an abscess based on what you have said- what anti biotic did he give you?

Have a look at the other post here in halth about a lump on face/swellign on nose as there's a link i posted in there about facial abscesses which might help.

Don't put the anti biotic in the drinking water as it is not an effective way of administering- you're best off hiding it in some tasty food. do you know which one he gave and what the dose was? vets regularly under dose rats so it would be worth you posting some info such as anti biotic, weight of rat and dose you have been prescribed so that people can give you a better idea of the best dose.

FYI if it is a facial abscess you may wish to take him to a more experienced vet. My understanding is that they need to be treated quickly and agressively as they can cause repeated problems if not.
