Its illegal to buy it without prescription. Why not ask your vets for some more?

Can't you get it from your vet? In fact, I would be very wary of donated baytril because it might have gone off! Definitely speak to your vet and get some on prescription. Its not expensive!

They wont prescribe any without seeing the rats first, but theyve got SDA.

Tbh they ae only doing what they should -you can't self diagnose and expect to be given licensed drugs even if you are experienced and right in your diagnosis as if they did give drugs out this way it would lead to all kinds of problems plus potentially serious consequences for the pets concerned.
Try arranging a vet visit when there are not any other clients with rats booked in -most vets will do this for you.

I'm not sure if this is true or not (perhaps someone can confirm this?) but Baytril goes off after about 6 months of being opened so you should be careful where you get it from.

Metacam goes off after 6 months- baytril you shouldn't keep longer than 1 month.

Why not? Oral Enrofloxacin is sensitive to light, and as long as it kept out of direct light, in cool, relatively dark conditions, and free from contaminants, then it should be fine for longer.

The awful clear brown bottles it often comes in from vets are hopeless really, i used to decant it into another bottle which wouldnt let the light in, but now i just buy the 100ml bottles and it lasts for ages, as they are essentially `light proof`.

When it starts to go `cloudy` and crystalise, then its going off

Your vet will have experience deaing with infectious conditions, and with pet rats being relatively rare it is a lot easier to deal with then a dog or cat etc. You need to call them and explain and ask how they recommend you deal with it.

Just explain the situation and ask for the last appointment in the day - and then ring to check there are no other rats attending the surgery around the same time. If there are I would just wait outside until the surgery has cleared. If it's a practice that doesn't see a lot of rats you're unlikely to have a problem. If, as at our vets, there are rats in pretty much every session then you just need to be a bit more proactive about protecting them.

That's the guidance given by the vets- if people want to do differently then that's up to them, but according to the vets it shouldn#t be kept more than one month after it's prescribed

That's so they can make more money selling you more! We buy a complete bottle at a time and it's fine several months after first beign opened if stored properly.

I've kept Baytril for months in a dark cupboard, and it's still worked fine.
