Baytrill for 2 weeks, still no better.
Baytrill for 2 weeks, still no better.
Maxi has been on 1.2ml of baytrill for 2 weeks for making 'pidgeon noises' and the odd sneeze. Although the sneezing is alot better hes still making the noises. He seems to be worse at night but generally fine in himself.
Should I take him back?
And if I do is there any meds or anything I could suggest? I dont want to undermine the Vet as he is great, but I want Maxi back to his less bird and more ratty self!

id suggest adding doxycyline to the mix, will goes alongside baytril and im sure most members would advise along that route as it is very affective.

1.2ml is quite a high dose, what weight is he?

Re: Baytrill for 2 weeks, still no better.

Maxi has been upped to 1.5 ml twice a day for a month plus I have to give him a powder called Bisolvon with his food.

Re: Baytrill for 2 weeks, still no better.
1.5ml is ridiculas! The ratio is 1KG to 1ml of Baytril.
That being split into two doses per day, so your now giving 3ml a day which is well for a very heavy rat!
It is possible the Baytril is ineffective agaisnt it in which case I would be trying a combination of the other AB's such as Doxy, Septrin, Ronaxon (sp?) etc

Re: Baytrill for 2 weeks, still no better.
Hes on 2.5% baytreil if that is any help?
Im worried now, I dont think hes that big for a rat (but saying that I've only ever had 4 rats)
This was a different vet to our usual, but he seemed pretty clued up on myco etc
Not a great pic, but hes on the right, this was taken about 2 weeks ago.

ETA: hes not that huge is he?

Re: Baytrill for 2 weeks, still no better.
I wouldn't lower the dose just yet - I remember reading that the Baytril dose can be increased (in multiples, so a high dose) for severe infection - that can be why the vet has upped the prescription. Admittedly, combination antbiotics seem more common. There's a guide here, that says for severe infection:
There's a link in this thread saying that you can multiply the usual dose up to 4x, so maybe that's what the vet has done.
What does Maxi weigh?

.Baytril 10mg/lb (20 mg/kg)

Re: Baytrill for 2 weeks, still no better.
He's about 400g we think, and the dose is actually 0.15 (dont worry I havent actually given him1.5!!)
theres another thread here http://www.fancy-rats.co.uk/community/v ... 4&t=153456 where I was asking about dose/weight etc.
Sorry for the confusion
I guess this can be locked now.

Hey Emma,
just to say his dose should be 0.2 ml twice a day of baytril.and i would also agree that doxycycline should be given in combination with the baytril, plus metacam as that reduces any inflammation in the lungs and makes them more comfortable.
