sick boy,7 weeks old

Post by izi » Mon Jul 25, 2011 1:14 pm

the first sign with my little boy was a swollen cheek under the eye and lots of porphyrin in the eye,
i rushed him to the vet immediately and started to give him the medicines. the swollen cheek dissapeared within 2 days,
i am now feeding him poly aid 3x a day beacuse he was loosing weight.
my vet prescribed him baytril but i think he is to young to have this and asked for another one,now she has given me bactrim.
is this ok?
he is also on carprofen.
today he gained some (3gr) weight,it isn't much but it is a start.
i am not sure if the antibiotics are working for him,he is on it since friday but i don't see much improvement yet.
what should i do?should i stop the bactrim and give him baytril instead?
please don't mind my poor english,i'm from the netherlands,if i make a stupid mistake, please let me know!

I'd never heard of either Bactrim or carprofen but you are correct that he shouldn't be on baytril and I wouldn't switch back to that. From what I can gather bactrim sounds more appropriate than baytril if it was a swelling under the eye. Um, i don't really know, but have a read of those two pages they should help :D

the bactrim is this one; http://ratguide.com/meds/antimicrobial_ ... _sulfa.php
the carprofen is this: http://ratguide.com/meds/nsaids/carprofen.php

i'm not sure what to do,the swelling is gone but it is still a bit red around the eye with some porphyrine.
he's not as active as his brother, his coat is a bit messy and fluffy....
i give him the poly aid 3x a day, he doesn't eat much solid food on his own.
should i stop the carprofen? maybe he feels a bit sick because of the possible side effects?

should i continue with the bactrim or should i make a swich to baytril?

he is still on the carprofen and bactrim, i stopped the syringe feeding 3 days ago and he is eating on his own now.
he weighs 202gr now.
he is much more active and playfull and his coat looks much better, unfortunately the red spot on his nose keeps coming back.
his face isn't swollen anymore and the porphyrine around his eye is gone.
could this be an allergic reaction to something?
should i continue the medicines? he is on it since 10 days now.

here is a picture i made this morning:

Sounds like it might have been an abcess - did the vet say what they think?

I'd always continue ABs to 14 days - last thing you want is a return because the bugs haven't quite been bashed.

she thought it might be a tooth infection but she wasn't sure.
his cheek was a little bit red on the inside of his mouth, but all of his tooth looked fine.

i will continue the meds for a couple of days more.
i'm just a bit confused because the red spot seems to come and go.
he is very happy and playful now, and he is eating very good and is gaining weight on a normal diet.
what could this be?
