How to convince a vet to try Draxxin... - please help!

Post by fatsoratso » Fri Aug 05, 2011 3:35 pm

First of all, apologies for all the threads I've started about my rat Ollie recently... :rollred:

I've now got a very specific problem. After trying every antibiotic under the sun (and combinations) to help shift Ollie's respiratory problems (most of which, admittedly, is lung scarring although vet thinks there might be some active infection as well that's causing flare-ups) I have been advised by other Fancy Rats members to try Draxxin as it is apparently a good drug to use against myco and works well in older rats. Apparently it's in the same family as Zithromax which is one of the few drugs that Ollie responded to when he was younger but Zithro is better for younger rats. Ollie is now around the 2 year mark although he was a rescue so we're not entirely sure.

I've just spoken to one of the vets at the practice we use and asked him about Draxxin. He said he used to work in farm medicine so remembers using it but is not convinced that it would be a good thing to try with an animal as small as a rat as it's normally licensed for cattle and other farm animals... In his words, "it would be asking for trouble". I didn't really know what to say to convince him that it might be worth a try so am hoping other people can suggest something in advance of the appointment I have with our usual vet on Monday.

Can anyone tell me about their experiences of using Draxxin, how they convinced their vet to order it in and give it a go, and also what dose would you recommend for a rat that weighs 430g? Maybe if I present the vet with some other people's case histories he might be more willing...

I'd really appreciate any advice - I feel like I owe it to Ollie to try absolutely everything possible as he had such a bad start in life.

I'm afriad i can't help with the draxxin issue, but if drugs in that family have been effective you could ask for erythromycin which the vet may be more willing to prescribe. I have found that very effective in combo with baytril for myco based ear infections that were really stubborn.

Sorry i can't help with the antibiotic you want to try though

baytril is used on cattle so wont your vet give you that either. seems a silly reason, maybe he should look it up and see if its safe for rats instead of assuming it wont be ok.

Baytril is the only AB that is specifically licensed in rats though whereas Draxxin isn't. Our vets are usually very willing to try other antibiotics but I think it's the fact that this is a farm animal drug that most small animal vets don't stock which is what's causing him concern. He did look it up in a book when I was on the phone to him and agreed that it looks like it would be effective against mycoplasma but said he'd never considered using it in rats...

I (well my vet) have used draaxin several times in rats where other ABs aren't being sufficiently effective, and a couple of times as the first approach in new flare ups in rats that have previously responded best to it. We've never had any adverse side-effects. I didn't really have to persuade my vet - I mentioned a friend had had life saving results in an otherwise end stage resp case, and he said ok, and disappeared off to steal some out the boot of a farm colleagues car (he now buys his own, after farm colleague objected...). Now we've had very obvious positive effects, he routinely uses it as one of his anti-resp problems armoury for rat clients generally.

I'm not sure what evidence I can give you that will convince your vet, but you can say that my vet is an exotics specialist, has used it in rats for well over a year now, and is satisfied that it is an appropriate drug, used properly. We give it as an injection, once a week, for 3 weeks. Unfortunately, what I don't know is the dose, as it's an injection and the vet does it, so I've never had to mess with that side of things - I can try and find out from him, but it probably won't be until Monday, as I don't think he's working this weekend.

could you ask your vet what dosage to give rats as i would like to ask my vet to try it. mine is very good at listening to what i want for my boys and will listen to any ideas i have about meds to give my boys. thats how i started using zithromax and ronaxan. he isnt a exotic vet tho, he is a normal vet, but i wouldnt swap for anything

Ok, will ask, but it may take a few days (I'm not planning seeing him any time soon, unless the rats get other ideas... , so it will be via email).

That would be great if you could find out even if you don't hear back for a while. If I manage to convince the vet on Monday he'd probably have to order it in first anyway.
