Buff and British Blue Dumbos

Post by Claire. » Sat Jan 16, 2010 5:19 pm

How common are these? I'd love to have a pair of either as my next babies but breeders appear to not often try for dumbo blues and I havent come across many buffs. I'd be lovely to have a rex buff dumbo but I tihnk I'd be pushing my luck there!

I'd email for the breeder's list as your first step: breeders@nfrs.org

I don't think buff is that common any more, although iirc I think Lisa of Bohemian Rats' daughter is starting to breed rexy buffs :)

Just so long as you extend your fussyness in terms of how the individual breeders (and indeed rescues) work in terms and husbandary and ethics, thern there's absolutely nothing wrong with prefering and wanting certain varieties over others :)

What about russian blue? Or does it have to be British? Shunamite may get a buff dumbo, and that's a very small may as tabirat is trying to bred the red eye gene out of her line as they are very prone to bleeding problems that don't appear to be as fixable as the british blue bleeding problems were :(

Your best chance is probably to contact as many breeders as possible, explain to them what you're looking for and be prepared to wait a long time, and take on the specific rats you want when they're offered. There are occasionally things crop up that breeders aren't expecting. You would also probably need to be happy to take one rat of the exact type you want, and any other rat from the same litter. If you're happy to take girls or boys you would increase your chances too.
