How many neutered boys in one group?

Post by Poppyhal » Fri Apr 09, 2010 8:06 pm

Is there an ideal number of neutered boys to keep in a group? Is three boys and three girls okay, or is that too many boys?

As long as everyone gets on does it matter? My James doesn't tolerate any other boys in his cage, he likes his girls all to himself!

I don't mind, the more the merrier. I was just wondering if people had experience of adding more boys and then it going a bit wrong. I always like to get others opinions before I make a mistake.

I would say it depends on the rats themselves, but if they are happy as a group then numbers don't matter.

I agree, Bear is the only neutered male in his group and Stimpy and Asha are best friends. Hopefully Boris will get along with everyone in that group as well!

I had four boys with five girls and it worked well - the balance didn't always stay equal due to cage mate deaths, but the group dynamics never seemed to change even when there were more boys than girls and vice versa.

All my boys are neutered and I've had varied numbers of each sex living in a cage together and it's always worked out! At the moment there's two boys and five girls and all is still well :)
