It usually means they are trying to see better. Rats with red eyes tend to do it the most as their sight is poor even for a rat.

My three fawn hoodie girls do it. They stand in a little line at the bars and sway from side to side. I reckon I could get them a job as the backing group for a band

It's technical name is paralax....when they sway, objects closer to them appear to move more than objects in the distance. It's basically a method of improving depth perception.

I have a black eyed girl who does it + she's fine. Just thought I'd mention it in case anyone was worried their black eyed rat was ill.

My ruby-eyed boy does it. He just likes to groove along to the funky rhythms in his head...

Strangely, his ruby-eyed brother doesn't do it at all. Hasn't got the vibe.

I'm so glad I found this! I brought a pair of white, red eyed rats yesterday, Albus and Remus, and noticed Albus keeps doing the head swaying. I thought there was something wrong with him! I never knew rats do this since the rat I had before was black eyed. It's a relief to discover that it's normal. So presumably not all red eyed rats do it, since Remus doesn't do it?

my white boy with red eye does it, its just so they can try and focus more on their surroundings and get a better view of things, rats in general have terrible eye sight, but red eyes eye sight is even worse than useual..
